Explainers

Two free explainers: scar types and pigment depth

Two of the larger searches in this study are acne scars and pigmentation, and both depend on a distinction most readers have not seen drawn: the shape of a scar, and how deep pigment sits. These two explainers are drawn in HTML and CSS rather than as images, so they stay sharp at any size, and they are free to embed with the credit line.

Acne scar types at a glance

Acne scar types at a glance

Simplified skin cross-sections. Flat red or brown marks after acne are not scars and are treated differently.

Ice pick

Narrow, usually under 2 mm and often under 1 mm across, and deep: a V-shaped shaft through the dermis.

Often first: Usually starts with TCA CROSS inside the pit. More

Boxcar

Round or oval dips with steep edges and a flat floor, usually about 1.5 to 4 mm across.

Often first: Fractional CO2 or RF microneedling; subcision first if the floor is tethered. More

Rolling

Broad, soft-edged waves, often 4 to 5 mm or wider, pulled down by fibrous bands; they soften when the skin is stretched.

Often first: Subcision to release the bands, then RF microneedling or CO2. More

Hypertrophic

Raised, but within the borders of the original wound; often flattens over one to two years.

Often first: Assessed separately from depressed scars. More

Keloid

Grows beyond the original wound (dashed line) into normal skin, rarely settles on its own and can return after treatment.

Often first: Planned with recurrence in mind. More

Illustration: IN Eternity Clinic, Singapore. General information, not a diagnosis; treatment is decided at assessment.

The shapes are simplified from our acne scar treatment guide, which explains how each type is assessed: stretching the skin softens rolling scars, while ice pick and boxcar scars stay visible. Most faces have more than one type, which is why scar plans are usually staged.

How deep is the pigment?

How deep is the pigment?

Where the extra pigment usually sits, simplified. Surface pigment generally responds more readily; deeper pigment is slower and needs a different approach.

Freckles

High in the epidermis. More

Sun spots

Surface (epidermal) pigment. More

Acne marks (PIH)

Epidermis, dermis or both; dermal marks last longer. More

Melasma

Epidermal, dermal or mixed; mixed is common in Singapore. More

Hori’s naevus

Deeper (dermal), grey-brown or blue-grey speckles on the upper cheeks. More

Illustration: IN Eternity Clinic, Singapore. General information, not a diagnosis; depth is judged at assessment.

Depth is one reason one pigment treatment does not suit every mark. Brown usually means pigment near the surface; grey-blue suggests deeper pigment. Many faces in Singapore have more than one type at once, which is why pigmentation treatment starts by naming each mark.

Methodology

How the data was collected

The figures are Ahrefs Keywords Explorer estimates of monthly search volume for Google in Singapore, read in October 2026 (16 and 20 October). Ahrefs models volumes from clickstream and search data and rounds them, as shown here (for example 1.6K becomes 1,600). They are estimates, not Google’s own counts, and they move from month to month.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the most searched aesthetic treatment in Singapore?

In this October 2026 Ahrefs data, “pico laser” is the largest single term, at about 6,200 searches a month, followed by “Rejuran” (4,800) and “PDRN” (3,800). Volumes are estimates for Google in Singapore.

Where does the data come from?

Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, Singapore database, read on 16 and 20 October 2026. The figures are Ahrefs’ estimates of monthly Google searches, rounded as Ahrefs shows them.

What does KD mean?

Keyword Difficulty is Ahrefs’ 0–100 estimate of how hard it is for a page to reach Google’s first ten results for a term. Most terms here are between 0 and 2; “acne treatment singapore” is 29.

Can I use the charts?

Yes. Embed the chart or the two explainers with the code on this page, or cite the study with a link. Please keep the credit line and the source, Ahrefs, Singapore, October 2026.

Does IN Eternity Clinic offer every treatment listed?

No. Terms marked with an asterisk, such as yellow laser, Linerase, CoolSculpting, fat freezing and Emsculpt, are for treatments IN Eternity Clinic does not offer. They are included because the study describes searches, and their links go to comparison pages.

Will the study be updated?

It is planned as an annual snapshot, with a refresh of the volumes each year. The date of the data is stated with every chart.
