In short

Neck tightening treats loose, sagging neck skin, but a “turkey neck” is usually a mix of loose skin, fat under the chin, vertical muscle bands and crepey surface skin. Radiofrequency such as VF Lift – Vertical Facelift and Thermage, focused ultrasound and FSX Laser work on the skin; anti-wrinkle injections relax bands. Heavy, hanging skin needs a surgical opinion.

Key facts
  • Neck fat sits in two layers: cadaver dissections found fat beneath the platysma muscle in three distinct compartments, separate from the fat above the muscle [1].
  • Band injections do not lift: in a series of 50 injections to relax neck bands, results were limited by redundant skin and no patient showed lifting of the lower face [2].
  • Radiofrequency on the neck: in 50 patients with mild to moderate laxity, 20 of them treated on the neck, one monopolar radiofrequency treatment was followed for 6 months with no scarring or pigment change [3].
  • Ultrasound reaches under the chin: a prospective study of focused ultrasound treated the submental region and the side of the neck in 35 evaluated adults, with transient redness and swelling the common effects [4].
  • Face and upper neck together: in a split-face trial in 20 adults, radiofrequency and focused ultrasound improved face and upper-neck laxity to a similar degree through 6 months [6].

Causes

What causes a sagging neck or turkey neck?

Thinning, looser skin, fat under the chin, muscle bands that become visible, and a softening jaw line above. A turkey neck is usually several of these at once.

Neck skin is thinner than facial skin and always moving, so it shows sun damage and collagen loss early. The platysma, a thin sheet of muscle, can separate at the front and show as vertical cords. Fat sits in two layers, above the platysma and beneath it in separate compartments [1], and the two behave differently.

Decision table

Which neck tightening treatment suits which cause?

Loose skin is tightened, bands are relaxed, fat is sculpted and crepey skin is resurfaced or hydrated. Most necks need two of these.

VF Lift – Vertical Facelift

How does VF Lift – Vertical Facelift tighten the neck?

It works on the face and neck with Volnewmer monopolar radiofrequency: Lift tightens loose skin along the jaw and neck, and Sculpt flattens pouching under the chin.

Dr Sin Yong maps the neck zone by zone and treats the jaw line in the same plan, so the two match. The water-cooled tip lets heat build in the dermis while the surface stays protected. Nothing is injected, and Sculpt does not affect facial hair. Most plans involve two to four sessions; most people feel deep warmth, the jaw can be tender for a day, and normal activities resume the same day. Details are on VF Lift – Vertical Facelift.

Ultrasound and radiofrequency

HIFU, Ultherapy or Thermage for the neck: what is the difference?

Focused ultrasound places heat points at set depths; Thermage heats the deep dermis broadly with radiofrequency. Both firm loose neck skin gradually.

Focused ultrasound can treat under the chin and the side of the neck [4]; here it is HIFU in Singapore on the Ultraformer MPT, or Ultherapy in Singapore with live imaging. Thermage FLX firms the skin and the tissue just beneath it. Evidence on the neck is modest but consistent: one radiofrequency treatment was followed for 6 months without scarring or pigment change [3], a small retrospective series of focused ultrasound reported improvement up to 180 days [5], and a split-face trial found the two methods similar [6]. Neck skin heals more slowly, so energy is set conservatively.

Crepey skin

Can FSX Laser or RF microneedling help crepey neck skin?

Yes, for texture and early looseness. Neither lifts heavy, hanging skin.

FSX Laser, the clinic’s non-ablative thulium and erbium glass protocol, is used on the neck mainly for tightening, with gentler settings and longer gaps than on the face; a course is usually three to five sessions. RF microneedling is used on the neck with depth adjusted for thin skin. For dry, thin skin, skin boosters or Profhilo improve quality.

Bands

Do anti-wrinkle injections help neck bands?

They can soften visible platysmal bands by relaxing the muscle. They do not tighten loose skin, and the effect wears off after a few months.

Small amounts go along each band; a variation along the jaw line is the Nefertiti lift. In an early series of 50 injections, results were limited where skin was redundant and no lower-face lift was seen [2]. Doses stay moderate, because too much can weaken neck muscles or affect swallowing. Where bands sit under loose skin, injections and tightening are planned together.

Threads

When is a thread lift used for the neck?

When the jaw line and upper neck have descended moderately and skin quality is reasonable. Threads reposition tissue; they do not firm crepey skin.

A thread lift in Singapore uses absorbable PDO or PCL threads under local anaesthesia, with a few days of swelling or bruising. The hold softens as threads dissolve and lasting lift is poorly supported [7], so threads are combined with tightening; see thread lift complications.

Suitability

Who should not have neck tightening?

Some people should wait, choose another treatment or have a surgical opinion instead. These are checked at assessment.

  • A pacemaker or implanted defibrillator: radiofrequency is not used; metal implants are reviewed first.
  • Pregnancy: elective energy treatments and injections are postponed.
  • Infection, inflammation or sunburn on the neck, until settled.
  • An unexplained neck lump or swelling: examined medically before anything cosmetic.
  • Heavy, hanging skin or a lot of fat, which non-surgical treatment cannot remove.
  • For band injections: a neuromuscular condition, swallowing difficulty, or breastfeeding.

This changes the plan, the timing or the route; it does not always mean nothing can be done.

Surgery

When is a surgical neck lift the better route?

When skin hangs in folds, thick bands sit under loose skin, or there is a lot of fat, especially beneath the muscle. Surgery removes and repositions tissue; energy cannot.

A surgical neck lift is done under anaesthesia with incisions and a recovery period. Where non-surgical treatment would not reach the goal, Dr Sin Yong says so and suggests a plastic surgery opinion; see facelift in Singapore: surgical vs non-surgical.

“A turkey neck is rarely one problem. Loose skin, fat under the chin and muscle bands each need a different answer, and tightening the skin will not relax a band or remove fat that sits beneath the muscle.”

Cost

What affects the cost of neck tightening in Singapore?

The cost follows what the examination finds: which components are treated, the device, the area covered and the number of sessions. A written plan and cost follow assessment.

  • Which components are present: loose skin, bands, fat under the chin or crepey skin.
  • The area: the front of the neck alone, or the neck planned with the jaw line and face.
  • The treatment: a single Thermage or focused ultrasound session, a course of VF Lift – Vertical Facelift or FSX Laser, or injections for bands.
  • Maintenance, which depends on how your neck changes over time.

How consultation and treatment fees are handled is explained on our fees page. At IN Eternity Clinic a consultation fee applies, and it is waived if you go ahead with any medical treatment; the fee is S$120.

Timeline

What happens in the weeks after neck tightening?

Little is visible at first. Warmth and redness settle within hours, and firming builds over weeks to months as collagen renews.

Singapore

Is neck tightening suitable for darker skin and Singapore’s climate?

Generally, yes. Radiofrequency and ultrasound do not target pigment, so darkening is less likely than with many lasers in skin types III to V.

Lasers are set more conservatively on tanned necks, and a bruise can leave a brown mark that fades slowly. The neck is often missed with sunscreen; in Singapore’s year-round sun it is the habit that most protects the collagen treatment builds.

What Dr Sin Yong looks for

  • Skin thickness, recoil and sun damage, in side light.
  • Platysmal bands at rest and when you grit your teeth.
  • How much fat lies under the chin, and whether it sits above or beneath the muscle.
  • The jaw line and chin above, so both are treated in step.
  • Any lump that needs medical assessment first.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Which non-surgical treatment works for a sagging neck?

No single treatment suits every neck. Loose skin responds to radiofrequency such as VF Lift – Vertical Facelift or Thermage FLX, or to focused ultrasound; bands to anti-wrinkle injections; crepey skin to FSX Laser or skin boosters. Most necks need a combination.

Can a turkey neck be fixed without surgery?

A mild to moderate turkey neck can often be improved by tightening the skin and relaxing bands. Non-surgical treatment does not remove skin or fat beneath the muscle, so heavy, hanging skin is better served by a surgical opinion.

How many sessions of neck tightening will I need?

Thermage FLX and focused ultrasound are often one session; VF Lift – Vertical Facelift usually two to four; FSX Laser a course of three to five. Change is reviewed at around three months.

Is HIFU or Thermage better for the neck?

Neither suits every neck. Ultrasound places heat at set depths, including under the chin; Thermage heats the deep dermis more broadly. A split-face trial found the two similar for upper-neck laxity; the choice follows skin thickness and comfort.

Does neck tightening hurt?

Most people feel deep warmth or short heat pulses, strongest over the jaw and collarbones. Settings are adjusted to your feedback, and numbing cream or cooling is used where helpful.

Can the neck be treated with the face in one visit?

Often, and it usually looks more natural, because a lifted jaw line can make an untreated neck look older. VF Lift – Vertical Facelift plans the jaw and neck in one session.

Will neck tightening get rid of my double chin?

Only partly. Tightening firms skin, and Sculpt or Time Freeze Laser LCLR® can reduce modest fullness, but a lot of fat, or fat beneath the muscle, is not removed by energy.

How long do neck tightening results last?

Collagen made after treatment remains, but the neck keeps ageing, so results soften gradually. Periodic maintenance is usual, and daily sunscreen on the neck helps the result hold.

Do anti-wrinkle injections tighten the neck?

No. They relax the platysma so vertical bands soften, but they do not tighten loose skin. Where skin is loose, injections are combined with tightening.
