Scalp Micropigmentation Singapore (SMP)

The look of density, planned around real hair loss.

SMP at IN Eternity Clinic starts with the cause of your hair loss. Medical treatment, H2LT laser and Regenera Activa can be planned alongside pigment, with sterile single-use technique and laser correction in the same clinic.

In short

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) places tiny pigment dots in the scalp to create a buzz-cut look, add density between thinning hairs or camouflage scars. It does not grow hair or stop hair loss, so the cause is assessed first. Density is built over two to three sessions, then touched up as pigment fades over years. At IN Eternity Clinic, SMP can be planned alongside medical hair-loss treatment.

The basics

What is scalp micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp micropigmentation, often called SMP or a hair tattoo, places thousands of tiny pigment dots in the upper dermis of the scalp. Each dot is sized and spaced to look like a short hair follicle, so from a normal viewing distance the scalp reads as closely shaved hair, or as denser hair where the scalp was showing through. It is one of the semi-permanent makeup treatments, and like them it fades slowly over years.

SMP changes how the scalp looks. It does not grow hair, slow hair loss or treat the scalp. That is why the cause of thinning is assessed first. Scalp micropigmentation is offered at IN Eternity Clinic. The cause of your hair loss, your scalp and the design are assessed at consultation under Medical Director Dr Sin Yong, and you are told at that consultation who will carry out each step.

Uses

What SMP can do: buzz-cut look, density, partings and scars

Guide only. Suitability is decided after the scalp and cause of hair loss have been examined.
GoalHow SMP is usedUsually suitsLimits
Buzz-cut or shaved lookDots across a bald or balding area with a natural, slightly soft hairlineMen with advanced pattern loss who are happy to keep hair clipped very shortReal hair must be clipped every few days to match
Density for longer hairDots placed between existing hairs to reduce scalp show-throughDiffuse thinning in men or women with darker hairWorks only while enough hair remains to cover the dots
Women’s partingFine, lighter dots along a widening parting and crownFemale pattern thinning once causes have been checkedShade must suit hair colour; grey hair is harder
Scar camouflagePigment matched into scars where hair will not growScars from injury or earlier hair transplant surgeryRaised, shiny or very pale scars take pigment unevenly

The illusion is easiest where dark hair meets a lighter scalp and harder with fair, grey or white hair. A design that is softer and slightly higher than a youthful hairline usually ages better.

Medical first

SMP and medical hair-loss treatment: why the cause comes first

Pattern hair loss is progressive. Pigment placed today sits under a hairline and crown that may keep changing, so a plan that ignores the cause can look wrong in a few years. Thinning in women in particular often has treatable contributors such as low iron or thyroid problems. At IN Eternity Clinic the order is: diagnose, treat what can be treated, then design pigment around the hair that is likely to remain.

Medical options are set out on hair loss treatment in Singapore, female hair loss treatment and hair restoration, including the clinic’s H2LT laser and Regenera Activa micrografting. When SMP and these treatments are combined, sessions are timed so the scalp is not treated while it is still healing, and any light- or laser-based scalp treatment is planned with the pigment in mind. Hair transplant surgery is not offered at IN Eternity Clinic; where it may help, a surgical opinion is discussed.

Suitability

Who SMP suits, and who should wait

Often a good fit: advanced pattern loss with a preference for a shaved look; stable thinning where hair is still present and dark enough; scars that are flat and fully healed.

Better to wait or plan differently:

Sessions

How many SMP sessions are needed?

Density is built in layers rather than in one sitting, so that each layer heals and can be judged before more is added. A typical plan is two to three sessions, sometimes four for large areas or scars, followed by touch-ups as pigment fades.

Typical only. The plan follows how your scalp heals.
StageTimingPurpose
Session 1Day 0Hairline design agreed; a light first layer of dots
Session 2About 1 to 3 weeks laterBuilds density and refines the hairline
Session 3 (and 4 if needed)A few weeks laterDarker or denser areas, scar blending, final adjustments
Touch-upsEvery few yearsRestores density and tone as pigment fades

Each session usually takes two to four hours depending on the area. Numbing cream is used; most people describe a scratching sensation that is uncomfortable rather than very painful, and the crown and hairline are more sensitive than the back.

“Pigment can make a scalp look fuller tomorrow. Only treating the cause decides how much real hair is still there in ten years.”
— Dr Sin Yong, Medical Director, IN Eternity Clinic

How long it lasts

How long does SMP last? Fading over years

SMP pigment usually lasts several years, fading gradually and needing a touch-up every few years to restore density and tone. Sun exposure, oily skin, exfoliating scalp products and the depth of placement all affect how fast it fades. Dots that are placed too deep can spread and merge, or take on a blue or greenish tint; correct depth is part of what makes SMP look natural for longer.

Risks

Risks of SMP: infection, allergy, granuloma, colour change, MRI

At IN Eternity Clinic, a reaction is assessed by a doctor in the same clinic.

Correction

Can scalp micropigmentation be removed?

Unwanted or over-dark SMP can usually be lightened with picosecond or Q-switched laser over several sessions, on the platforms used for tattoo removal and pico laser. A hairline that is too low or too sharp can be softened, and blurred areas reduced, but complete clearance is not always possible and nearby hair can lighten for a while. A conservative first design is the simplest protection.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is scalp micropigmentation?

SMP, sometimes called a hair tattoo, places tiny pigment dots in the upper scalp to imitate short hair follicles or reduce scalp show-through. It changes appearance only; it does not grow hair.

How many sessions of SMP are needed?

Typically two to three sessions, sometimes four, spaced one to three weeks apart to build density in layers, followed by touch-ups every few years as pigment fades.

How long does scalp micropigmentation last?

Usually several years, fading gradually. Sun, oily skin, scalp products and placement depth affect how fast. Touch-ups restore density and tone.

Does SMP work for women or long hair?

It can reduce scalp show-through along a widening parting or crown when enough hair remains to blend with the dots. Because thinning in women often has treatable causes, a medical assessment comes first.

Can SMP cover a hair transplant scar?

Often. Pigment can be blended into flat, healed scars, including linear or dotted scars from earlier hair transplant surgery. Raised, shiny or very pale scars take pigment less evenly.

Does SMP stop hair loss?

No. SMP is pigment in the skin. Whatever is causing the hair loss continues unless it is treated, which is why medical treatment is often combined with SMP.

Can scalp micropigmentation be removed?

It can usually be lightened with picosecond or Q-switched laser over several sessions. Complete clearance is not always possible, so a conservative first design matters.

How much does SMP cost in Singapore?

Published Singapore prices on this page run from a few hundred dollars per session for small areas to a few thousand dollars for a full plan. IN Eternity Clinic quotes after assessment; the consultation fee is S$120, waived with any medical treatment.
