Tattoo removal cost in Singapore depends on the tattoo’s size, ink colours and density, age and location, your skin type, the laser used and the number of sessions. Each session is priced by area; the total depends on how many sessions the ink needs. At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong gives a written quote after assessment.

Key facts
  • How it works: very short laser pulses shatter ink particles; immune cells clear the fragments over the weeks between sessions.
  • Picosecond and nanosecond: picosecond pulses are far shorter than Q-switched nanosecond pulses and can break ink into finer fragments.
  • Wavelength and colour: black responds to 1064 nm; red and some other colours to 532 nm; green, blue-green, yellow and white are harder.
  • Size: the treated area sets the time and energy per session, so larger tattoos cost more per visit.
  • Sessions: the number varies widely with ink, depth, colour, age, location and skin type; spacing of several weeks lets the skin clear ink.
  • Location: tattoos further from the heart, such as on the ankles or fingers, often clear more slowly.
  • Cosmetic tattoos: some brow and lip inks contain iron oxide or titanium dioxide that can darken with laser, so a test area comes first.
  • The quote: at IN Eternity Clinic the per-session cost, expected range of sessions and review are written into a quote after assessment.

Why prices differ

Why is tattoo removal priced per session?

Laser tattoo removal works in stages. Each session breaks some of the ink into fragments, and the body clears those fragments over the following weeks. The next session then treats what remains. Because nobody can know exactly how many sessions a particular tattoo will need, most clinics price each session by the area treated and give an estimated range for the course.

That makes the per-session price only half the picture. A low per-session price with many more sessions can cost more in total than a higher price with fewer. The useful comparison is between complete estimates: per-session cost, the likely number of sessions and the reasons behind that estimate.

Per-session pricing is usually set by size bands, such as small, medium and large, or by the area in square centimetres. Ask which the clinic uses and where your tattoo sits. A tattoo near the boundary between two bands can be measured at assessment, and the band should be written into the quote so that it does not change from one session to the next.

The cost drivers

What drives the cost of tattoo removal?

The main factors are set out in the table.

FactorWhat changesWhy it affects cost
SizeArea of skin treatedSets time and energy per session
ColoursBlack, red, green, multicolourMore colours need more wavelengths and passes
Ink density and ageProfessional, amateur, layeredDense or layered ink needs more sessions
LocationTrunk, limbs, hands, feetDistal sites often clear more slowly
Skin typeLighter or darker skinDarker skin needs gentler settings
LaserPicosecond or Q-switchedDifferent devices and fragment sizes

Size and colour. A small black script tattoo and a large multicoloured piece are different jobs. Each colour absorbs light most strongly at particular wavelengths, so a multicoloured tattoo may need more than one wavelength in each session. Green, blue-green, yellow and white inks are among the hardest to clear.

Ink density, age and layering. Professional tattoos usually hold more ink, deeper and more evenly, than amateur ones. Older tattoos have often faded partly already. Cover-up tattoos layer one design over another, so there is more ink to clear. Scoring systems used in practice weigh these factors, together with location and skin type, to estimate the number of sessions.

Skin type. Darker skin contains more natural pigment, which also absorbs laser light. Settings are therefore chosen to protect the surrounding skin and reduce the risk of light or dark patches. This can mean gentler sessions and a longer course, which is the safer trade-off.

“I cannot promise you a number of sessions, and nobody honestly can. What I will do is explain the estimate and revise it as your skin responds.”

Pico or Q-switched

Picosecond or Q-switched: does the laser change the cost?

Q-switched lasers deliver pulses in the nanosecond range and have been used for tattoo removal for decades. Picosecond lasers deliver much shorter pulses, which break ink into finer fragments that the body may clear more readily. Published reviews suggest picosecond devices may clear some tattoos in fewer sessions, though response varies with ink and skin.

Picosecond platforms are more expensive for clinics to buy and run, so a picosecond session may be priced differently. Whether it is better value depends on whether it shortens your course. Some tattoos benefit from both: picosecond pulses for some colours and Q-switched pulses for others, in the same session. At IN Eternity Clinic, both picosecond and Q-switched pulses are available on the Fotona StarWalker and DEKA TORO platforms, and Dr Sin Yong chooses wavelengths and pulse type for each colour. Over the course

What does a full course cost, and is fading for a cover-up cheaper?

The total is the per-session cost multiplied by the number of sessions, and the number of sessions is the uncertain part. Estimates improve after the first one or two sessions, when the way your ink fades can be seen. That is why a fair plan gives a range at the start and narrows it as you go, rather than fixing a number on day one. Photographs taken at each visit in the same light let you and the doctor see progress objectively when deciding whether to continue.

Sessions are spaced several weeks apart, so a full course can take many months or longer. The time between sessions is when the body clears ink, and shortening it does not speed things up. If you are removing a tattoo for a deadline, such as a job requirement or an event, say so at assessment; the plan may aim for significant fading by that date rather than full clearance. If your tattoo sits on thin skin, such as the wrist or ankle, or near a scar, settings are adjusted and the estimate may be longer.

Often, yes. If you plan to cover the old tattoo with a new design, you may need only enough fading for the new ink to sit cleanly over it, which usually means fewer sessions than full removal. The tattoo artist doing the cover-up can say how light the old design needs to be.

Partial removal is also an option for one element of a design, such as a name. Treating a smaller area costs less per session, though the surrounding ink must be protected. These options are discussed at assessment and reflected in the quote.

A fair quote

What should a fair tattoo removal quote include?

A fair quote states the area to be treated, the laser and wavelengths to be used, the per-session cost, an honest estimated range for the number of sessions with the reasons for it, the spacing between sessions, numbing and cooling, aftercare and how progress will be reviewed. It should say plainly that complete clearance is not always possible.

For cosmetic tattoos such as eyebrow embroidery or lip tattoos, the quote should include a test area first, because some cosmetic inks darken with laser. It should also mention the risks of blistering, texture change and pigment change, which are higher when settings are pushed too hard.

Aftercare matters for both safety and cost. Treated skin may blister or crust; it is kept clean, covered when advised and protected from the sun. Poor aftercare raises the risk of infection, texture change and pigment change, which can delay the next session and lengthen the course.

Red flags

Red flags when comparing tattoo removal prices

A promised number of sessions or full clearance. Nobody can know this in advance. A large prepaid course before the first session. Your skin’s response to the first one or two sessions is the most reliable guide to the rest. Very aggressive settings to “save sessions”. Excess energy raises the risk of blistering and scarring.

Unnamed lasers or IPL marketed for tattoo removal. IPL is not designed for tattoo ink and can burn the skin. Treatment by someone who is not medically supervised. Lasers that can remove tattoos can also injure skin. Ask which laser will be used and who will operate it. See aesthetic clinic red flags.

At IN Eternity Clinic

How tattoo removal is quoted at IN Eternity Clinic

Dr Sin Yong looks at the tattoo’s size, colours, density and age, its location and your skin type, and asks whether it is professional, amateur or a cover-up. For cosmetic tattoos he plans a test area. He also asks about any earlier removal attempts, which can leave scarring that changes the plan. He then chooses the wavelengths and pulse type for each colour on the tattoo removal platforms.

You receive a written quote stating the per-session cost, the estimated range of sessions and why, the spacing, numbing and cooling, aftercare and review. The estimate is updated as the tattoo responds, and nothing is added on the day without your agreement. For background, read tattoo regret.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does tattoo removal cost in Singapore?

Each session is priced by the area treated, and the total depends on how many sessions the tattoo needs. Size, colours, density, age, location and skin type all affect that number. At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong assesses the tattoo and gives a written quote with a per-session cost and an estimated range.

How many sessions will my tattoo need?

It varies widely. Small, older, black amateur tattoos may need fewer; large, dense, multicoloured professional tattoos may need many more. An estimate is given after assessment and refined as the tattoo responds over the first sessions. The estimate is written into the plan.

Is pico laser tattoo removal more expensive?

Per session it may be, because picosecond platforms cost more to run. It may also shorten the course for some inks. Whether it is better value depends on your tattoo, which is assessed before the quote. Both pulse types are available at IN Eternity Clinic.

Why do coloured tattoos cost more to remove?

Different colours absorb different wavelengths, so multicoloured tattoos need more than one wavelength and often more sessions. Green, blue-green, yellow and white inks are among the hardest to clear. Black usually responds most readily, and a single-colour black tattoo is often the simplest to plan.

Can eyebrow embroidery be removed, and what does it cost?

Often, yes. Some cosmetic inks darken with laser, so a test area is treated first. The cost depends on the area, ink response and number of sessions, and is quoted after the test area has been assessed. Results with cosmetic inks are less predictable.

How far apart are sessions?

Usually several weeks, to let the skin heal and the body clear fragmented ink. Treating too often does not speed up removal and raises the risk of skin injury. The spacing is stated in the written plan. Several weeks is typical.

Will tattoo removal leave a scar?

The risk is low with appropriate settings and good aftercare, but blistering, texture change and pigment change can occur. These risks are higher with aggressive settings or poor aftercare, and are explained at consultation. Aftercare instructions are given in writing after each session.
