In short

Lip blush is cosmetic tattooing that adds a soft tint and redefines the lip border. Lips swell for a day or two, peel around days four to seven, look faded, then bloom back by about six weeks, when a touch-up evens the colour. Cold-sore history is discussed first, and dark lips are treated with laser before colour is added. It fades over one to two years.

The basics

What is lip blush?

Lip blush, also called lip blushing, lip embroidery or lip tattoo, is cosmetic tattooing of the lips. Fine needles place a soft wash of pigment into the lip to even out colour, sharpen a faded border and add a natural tint, like a good tinted balm rather than a full lipstick. It is one of the semi-permanent makeup treatments, and it fades: lips renew quickly, so colour usually softens over one to two years.

Lip blush changes colour, not shape or volume. Fuller lips are a filler question, and lips that are dark because of pigment in the skin need that pigment assessed first. Lip blush is offered at IN Eternity Clinic. Your lips, cold-sore history and medicines are assessed at consultation under Medical Director Dr Sin Yong, and you are told at that consultation who will carry out each step.

Lip filler and lip blush are usually spaced several weeks apart so swelling from one does not distort the other.

Dark lips

Lip blush for dark lips: why pigment comes first

Dark lips are common in Singapore, from sun, smoking, friction, some medicines or simply genetics. Tattooing a pink or coral pigment over untreated brown or bluish pigment rarely gives a clean result: the colours mix and can heal greyish or purple. Many studios offer “colour correction” with neutralising pigment, but that adds more ink rather than treating the cause, and some cosmetic inks later darken under laser.

The order at IN Eternity Clinic is pigment first, colour second. Dark pigment is assessed and lightened with lip pigmentation treatment over a course of laser sessions. Once the lips have settled, lip blush can add soft colour and definition on a more even base, usually with less pigment.

Cold sores

Cold sores (HSV) and lip blush: tell the doctor first

Lip tattooing can trigger a cold sore in anyone who carries the herpes simplex virus, even if outbreaks are rare. A flare during healing is uncomfortable and can leave patchy colour. If you have ever had a cold sore, this is discussed with the doctor before booking; an antiviral medicine started before the session and continued for a few days is a common precaution, the same approach used before laser resurfacing.

An active cold sore means waiting until it has fully healed. Anyone with frequent outbreaks, a weakened immune system or eczema around the mouth needs a more careful plan.

Suitability

Who lip blush suits, and who should wait

Often a good fit: pale, uneven or faded lip colour; a border that has blurred with age; people who want a natural tint without daily lipstick.

Better to wait or plan differently:

Most can be planned around once your lips and history have been examined.

Comfort

Does lip blush hurt?

Lips are sensitive, so a numbing cream is applied for about 20 to 30 minutes and topped up as the work progresses. Most people describe stinging or vibration rather than sharp pain, though it is uncomfortable and varies between people. Swelling is usual for one to three days. A session takes about two hours.

“Lip blush adds colour; it does not treat dark lips. If the pigment underneath is the problem, I would treat that first and add colour afterwards.”
— Dr Sin Yong, Medical Director, IN Eternity Clinic

Correction

Can lip blush be removed or corrected?

Lip colour that has healed too dark, uneven or the wrong tone can often be lightened with picosecond or Q-switched laser, the platforms used for tattoo removal and pico laser. Lips need particular care: pink, red and flesh-toned inks can turn dark when lasered, so a small test area is treated and reviewed first. Several sessions are usually needed, and complete clearance is not always possible.

Choosing a conservative shade and adding colour at the touch-up keeps correction simpler.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is lip blush?

Lip blush (lip blushing, lip embroidery or lip tattoo) is cosmetic tattooing that adds a soft, even tint to the lips and redefines a faded border. It changes colour, not volume, and fades over one to two years.

How long does lip blush last?

Usually one to two years, sometimes longer. Two sessions are common, with a touch-up at six to eight weeks and a refresh as the colour fades. Sun and smoking shorten it.

How long does lip blush take to heal?

The surface heals in about a week, with peeling between days four and seven. Colour then looks faded for a week or so and blooms back over weeks three to six. The result is judged at about six weeks.

When can I kiss after lip blush?

Usually once the surface has healed and peeling has finished, about seven to ten days, and longer if either person has a cold sore. Kissing earlier can irritate the lips and transfer infection.

Can I get lip blush if I get cold sores?

Often yes, with planning. Tell the doctor about any cold-sore history; antiviral cover around the session is commonly advised. An active cold sore must heal fully before lip blush.

Is lip blush good for dark lips?

Lip blush covers colour rather than treating it. At IN Eternity Clinic dark lip pigment is assessed and lightened with laser first, and lip blush is added once the lips have settled.

Lip blush or lip filler: what is the difference?

Lip blush changes colour and border definition; lip filler changes volume and shape. They can be combined, usually spaced several weeks apart.

How much does lip blush cost in Singapore?

Published Singapore prices on this page range from a few hundred dollars for a single session with touch-up to around two thousand dollars for multi-session packages. IN Eternity Clinic quotes after assessment; the consultation fee is S$120, waived with any medical treatment.
