Width can come from muscle, fat, a short chin, jowls or bone. At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong checks which applies before planning jaw slimming, chin filler or lifting.
WhatsApp to Enquire →Key facts ↓A V-shape face is a lower face that tapers from the cheekbones to a defined chin. Width can come from a large masseter muscle, fat, a short chin, descending jowls or bone. Jaw slimming injections reduce the muscle, chin filler adds projection, threads or tightening lift jowls, and fat-directed energy treats fullness. Dr Sin Yong checks which applies before planning.
A V-shape face is one that tapers: widest at the cheekbones, narrowing along a clean jawline to a chin that sits forward and has some length. It is a matter of proportion rather than size. A small face with a short chin and square jaw can look wider at the bottom than a larger face with good chin projection.
A consensus of Asian aesthetic practitioners describes an oval or softly tapered lower face as a common goal in East and Southeast Asian patients, who more often present with a broader lower face, stronger masseter muscles and a less projected chin. With age, the picture changes again: the jaw bone loses some definition, jowls descend over the jawline and fat gathers under the chin, so the taper blurs even if the face was V-shaped at twenty-five.
That is why “V-shape face treatment” is not a single procedure. The plan depends on what is widening or blurring the lower face, and most people have more than one contributor.
Dr Sin Yong examines the face at rest, while clenching, in profile and from below before suggesting anything. The table shows how each contributor is recognised and what changes it.
| Contributor | How it is recognised | What changes it | At IN Eternity Clinic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Masseter muscle | A bulge at the angle of the jaw that hardens when you clench | Muscle-relaxing injections that let the muscle slim over weeks | Jaw slimming |
| Short or retruded chin | In profile, the chin sits behind the lower lip; the jaw looks wide from the front | Chin projection and length with filler | Chin filler |
| Fat in the lower face or under the chin | Soft fullness that can be pinched; little change on clenching | Fat-directed energy such as laser lipo-remodelling or microwave | Double chin removal |
| Jowls and laxity | Tissue that sits below the jawline and lifts when pushed up | Thread lift or energy-based tightening | Thread lift, skin tightening |
| Jaw bone | Width that stays the same whatever the muscle, fat or skin | Not changed without surgery; contours are balanced around it | Assessed and explained honestly |
The masseter is the main chewing muscle. In people who clench or grind, often at night, it enlarges and gives the jaw a square outline at the angle. A prescription muscle-relaxing injection reduces the muscle’s activity, and the muscle gradually becomes less bulky from disuse. The change develops over weeks rather than days and is assessed at a review, with further sessions planned individually.
The clench test matters. If the bulge at the jaw angle hardens when you bite down, the masseter is a real contributor. If it does not, the width is coming from fat, bone or the parotid gland, and slimming injections will not touch it. Chewing usually feels a little weaker for some weeks, particularly with tough food; this tends to settle. See masseter jaw slimming and masseter slimming injections.

A chin that sits back shortens the lower third of the face and makes the jaw look wider and the neck fuller. Adding a little projection and length at the chin is often the single change that does most for a V-shape, because it creates the point of the “V”. Hyaluronic acid filler, or a more structural product such as calcium hydroxylapatite, is placed deep on the bone in small amounts.
The change is visible once swelling settles, usually within a week or two. Vascular complications are rare but serious, so the anatomy is mapped first and a dissolving agent is kept to hand for hyaluronic acid. Planning details are on chin filler and in chin filler for a V-shape.
Where the jawline has lost its edge, the reason decides the tool. A jaw that was never strongly defined may benefit from filler along the angle and border, which sharpens the outline; see jawline filler. A jawline blurred by descending jowls needs lifting, and a thread lift repositions tissue mechanically along planned vectors.
Where loosening skin is the issue, energy-based tightening helps: focused ultrasound such as HIFU for the deeper layer, or the VF Lift – Vertical Facelift on Volnewmer radiofrequency in leaner faces. Platysma bands that pull the jawline down can be softened with muscle-relaxing injections in a Nefertiti lift.
“A wide jaw that hardens when you clench is muscle. One that does not is something else, and slimming injections will not touch it.”
Fullness under the chin softens the line between jaw and neck and makes the lower face look heavier, even in a slim person. It can come from fat, loose skin, the position of the platysma muscle or a short chin, and each is treated differently. Fat-predominant fullness is usually treated with Time Freeze Laser LCLR® or Onda Pro microwave; laxity with tightening; a short chin with projection.
The full assessment and options are on double chin removal Singapore. IN Eternity Clinic does not offer fat freezing or fat-dissolving injections and uses device-based fat reduction instead.
Non-surgical treatment can slim a strong masseter, reduce modest fat, add chin projection and lift early jowls. It cannot narrow the jaw bone, and it cannot remove the buccal fat pad, which is a surgical procedure that IN Eternity Clinic does not perform. Where bone is the main reason for width, the aim shifts to balance: more chin projection and better definition can make the same jaw read as narrower.
Weight change matters too. Losing weight reduces facial fat but does nothing for the masseter, a short chin or loose skin, so a slim person can still have a square or heavy lower face. A realistic plan says which contributors can change and by roughly how much, before anything is booked. The wider picture is on V-shape face and jawline and face shape.

Because each treatment works on its own timescale, the order matters. Masseter injections take weeks to show, so they usually come first; chin projection follows so it can be judged against the slimmer jaw; lifting or tightening comes last if it is still needed.
| Step | Treatment | When change shows | Typical recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Masseter jaw slimming | Gradually over several weeks | Little; chewing may feel weaker for a while |
| 2 | Chin filler | Once swelling settles, often within 1–2 weeks | Swelling or bruising for a few days |
| 3 | Double chin fat reduction | Over weeks to a few months, often across a short course | Varies by device; usually mild |
| 4 | Thread lift or tightening | Threads at once, settling over 1–2 weeks; tightening over 2–6 months | Threads: tenderness for days; tightening: usually mild |
Cost depends on how many contributors are treated, which treatments are used, the amount of product or number of threads, and how the plan is staged over time. A single treatment for a strong masseter costs differently from a staged plan combining jaw slimming, chin projection and lifting. At IN Eternity Clinic the plan and its cost are explained after assessment, before anything is agreed, and the consultation fee is waived with any medical treatment.
By treating whatever is widening the lower face: muscle-relaxing injections for a strong masseter, chin filler for a short chin, fat-directed energy for fullness, and threads or tightening for jowls. Most people need two of these. The jaw bone itself does not change without surgery.
The muscle slims gradually from disuse, so change develops over several weeks rather than days and is assessed at a review. Further sessions are planned individually. If the jaw does not harden when you clench, the width is probably not muscle.
Often, yes. Adding projection and length at the chin creates the point of the V and makes the jaw look narrower from the front and the neck cleaner in profile. It suits people whose chin sits back; it does not reduce muscle or fat.
A thread lift can lift descended cheeks and jowls, which sharpens a jawline blurred by sagging. It does not slim the masseter or add chin projection, so it is part of a V-shape plan when laxity is one of the contributors.
Chewing can feel weaker for some weeks, especially with tough or chewy food, and this usually settles as you adapt. Smiling is not normally affected when the injections are placed correctly in the masseter.
They overlap. Face slimming usually means reducing width from muscle or fat; a V-shape also depends on chin projection and a defined jawline. A plan for a V-shape therefore often adds structure as well as reducing width.
Rarely. Masseter injections take weeks to show, and chin filler is easier to judge against the slimmer jaw, so most plans are staged over a few visits. Some people need only one treatment if a single contributor dominates.
