Laser Fat Reduction for the Face and Chin
Jowl pads, the area under the chin and a heavy lower face are small zones where fat and loose skin usually arrive together. Laser lipo-modelling treats both in one pass.
Ask Dr Sin Yong on WhatsApp →Laser fat reduction for the face uses a laser to heat small, mapped pockets of superficial fat (the jowl pad, under the chin, the lower cheek) until fat cells are disrupted and cleared by the body over the following weeks, while the same energy contracts and remodels the skin above. At IN Eternity Clinic this is the lipo-modelling part of the Time Freeze Laser LCLR® protocol: an alternative to micro-liposuction for small zones, without an incision or anaesthesia and with little downtime. It removes less fat per session than liposuction, suits zones where laxity is part of the problem, and the result varies between people.

- Laser energy delivered into subcutaneous fat causes adipocyte disruption and a measurable tightening of the overlying skin, which was the original rationale for laser-assisted lipolysis (Badin 2002).
- Fractional non-ablative lasers at 1,550 nm produce dermal collagen remodelling with little downtime (Manstein 2004).
- Submental fullness is a mix of fat, skin laxity and platysma, and the treatment has to match the dominant cause (Humphrey 2023 and clinical consensus).
How laser fat reduction works
Fat cells are sensitive to heat. When a laser delivers energy at the right wavelength and depth into a small pocket of superficial fat, the cells are disrupted and their contents are cleared by the lymphatic system over four to eight weeks. The same heat causes collagen in the dermis above to contract immediately and to remodel over the following months, which is why the skin over a treated zone tends to look firmer rather than emptier.
In the LCLR protocol the fat zones are mapped first, the energy is delivered point by point under cooling, and the lifting pass over the same area is done in the same session. Lipo zones feel warm and tender for a day or two; redness settles in hours.
The face and neck zones that respond
| Zone | What is usually found | What the pass does |
|---|---|---|
| Jowl fat pad | Small pocket of fat that has slid below the jawline with laxity | Reduces the pad and lifts the jawline skin |
| Under the chin (submental) | Fat, loose skin and sometimes platysma bands | Reduces fat and tightens; bands may need a separate approach |
| Lower cheek / pre-jowl | Fullness that blurs the jawline | Thins the fullness and sharpens the angle |
| Nasolabial fold shoulder | Descended cheek fat casting a shadow | Lifts rather than removes; fat is rarely the target here |
| Buccal region | Deep fat (not reached) plus superficial fullness | Superficial fullness reduced; deep buccal fat is a surgical decision |
Laser lipo-modelling vs the other routes
| Laser lipo-modelling (LCLR) | Micro-liposuction | Fat freezing (cryolipolysis) | Injection lipolysis | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Heat disrupts fat; collagen contracts | Fat removed through a cannula | Cold injures fat cells | Chemical (deoxycholic acid) dissolves fat |
| Skin tightening | Yes, same pass | No | No | No |
| Downtime | Redness hours; tenderness 1–2 days | Bruising, garment, days to weeks | Numbness, swelling 1–3 weeks | Swelling 1–2 weeks per session |
| Fat removed per session | Small | Larger, single procedure | Moderate | Moderate |
| Sessions | A spaced course | One | 1–3 | 2–6 |
| Best for | Small zones with laxity | Larger, well-defined pockets with good skin | Pinchable fat, good skin | Submental fat with good skin |
The deciding question is whether the skin would hold its shape after the fat is gone. Where it would not, a method that tightens as it reduces is the sensible first choice.
Who it suits, and who it does not
- Suits: mild to moderate jowl or submental fullness with some skin laxity; people who do not want surgery or a garment; those maintaining weight.
- Needs discussion: large fat volumes (liposuction does more), very loose skin with little fat (lifting only), weight that is still changing.
- Not suitable: pregnancy, active infection, recent tanning, undiagnosed lumps, and advanced laxity where surgery is the right answer.
If overall weight is the cause, a medical weight-management programme comes first and the contour zones are treated once weight is stable.
Results, timeline and cost
Some tightening is visible on the day. The fat reduction shows over four to eight weeks and continues to about three months as the collagen remodels. A spaced course is usual; the number of sessions is set at assessment and reviewed as the zone responds. The reduction tends to hold while weight is stable.
Cost depends on the number of zones and sessions and on whether lifting of other areas is combined; it is explained at the consultation. The consultation fee is S$120 and is waived when a treatment is started.

Is laser fat reduction the same as laser liposuction?
No. Laser liposuction (laser-assisted lipolysis) uses a fibre inserted under the skin through an incision to melt fat before it is suctioned. Laser lipo-modelling works from outside the skin, without an incision, on small pockets only.
Does it work for a double chin?
For a double chin that is mainly fat with some loose skin, yes, as a spaced course. For a double chin that is mainly loose skin or platysma bands, the lifting pass matters more than the fat pass, and large volumes of fat do better with liposuction.
Will the fat come back?
Disrupted fat cells are cleared and do not regrow, but the remaining cells can enlarge with weight gain. The result tends to hold while weight is stable.
How many sessions are needed?
Usually a spaced course, set at the assessment and reviewed as the zone responds. Small zones respond with fewer sessions than larger ones.
Is it painful?
Most people describe warmth and light prickling under cooling. Lipo zones can feel tender for a day or two afterwards, like a mild bruise without the colour.
Can it treat buccal fat?
It reduces superficial fullness over the buccal region. The deep buccal fat pad itself is not reached by a laser from outside and is a surgical decision.
Is it suitable for men?
Yes. Jowl and submental fullness in men responds in the same way; beard hair is not affected by the lipo-modelling wavelengths used.
