Fat freezing is the treatment most people have heard of. This guide explains how it works and how it compares with the microwave and radiofrequency approaches Dr Sin Yong uses at IN Eternity Clinic on Orchard Road.
WhatsApp to Enquire →Key facts ↓Fat freezing, or cryolipolysis, cools a pinched area of fat so that fat cells break down and are cleared over weeks. Microwave contouring (DEKA Onda) heats fat and its connective framework, and the 4K Body Lift places radiofrequency microneedles into mapped fat and skin. IN Eternity Clinic does not offer fat freezing; it uses Onda and the 4K Body Lift.
Fat freezing is the non-surgical fat reduction treatment most people in Singapore have heard of, often by the brand name CoolSculpting. When people ask about body contouring, it is usually the first thing they mention, and a fair question follows: how does it compare with other approaches?
This guide explains how cryolipolysis works, what it does well and where its limits are, and then sets it beside the two approaches used at IN Eternity Clinic: microwave energy with DEKA Onda Pro, and radiofrequency microneedling with the 4K Body Lift. IN Eternity Clinic does not offer fat freezing. That is stated plainly so the comparison can be read for what it is: an explanation, not a sales argument.
All three aim to reduce stubborn, localised fat that does not respond to diet and exercise. None is a weight-loss treatment.
It also helps to be clear about the goal. Some people want a smaller measurement in one area; others are more bothered by loose skin, dimpling or a soft outline than by fat itself. The three approaches overlap, but they are not interchangeable, and the right choice depends on which of these is driving the concern.

Cryolipolysis rests on a simple observation: fat cells are more vulnerable to cold than the skin and other tissues around them. In the laboratory work that established the method, controlled cooling of the skin surface selectively damaged fat in the layer beneath while sparing the skin above.
In treatment, a suction applicator draws a fold of tissue between cooling panels and holds it for a set time. The cold triggers a slow process in which fat cells break down, an inflammatory response follows, and the debris is cleared by the body over the next two to three months. The change is therefore gradual, and it is judged at around three months rather than immediately.
Reviews of the published studies report measurable reductions in fat-layer thickness in treated areas, with high satisfaction in many series. Results depend on having a pinchable bulge that fits the applicator; very firm fat, loose skin or areas that cannot be drawn into the cup respond less well.
Sessions typically involve an hour or so per applicator placement, with an initial intense cold and pulling sensation that becomes numb. Larger areas may need several placements. Weight stability matters for all fat reduction treatments: fat cells that remain in and around the treated area can still enlarge if weight is gained.
“The question is not which machine is newest. It is how much of the problem is fat, how much is loose skin, and how much is cellulite.”
Common effects include redness, bruising, swelling and numbness in the treated area, which can last several weeks. Some people experience delayed pain, a deep ache that starts a few days after treatment and settles over days to weeks.
A rare but important complication is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia. Instead of shrinking, the treated area gradually becomes larger and firmer over the following months, often taking the shape of the applicator. It was first described in detail in 2014, appears to be more common in men, and does not resolve on its own; correction usually requires liposuction. Its rarity is reassuring, but it is a risk that should be explained before treatment.
Fat freezing also does not tighten skin. Where skin is lax, removing fat beneath it can leave the area looking softer rather than firmer.
Cryolipolysis is generally avoided in people with cold-related conditions such as cryoglobulinaemia, cold urticaria or paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria, over hernias in the treated area, and during pregnancy. These are among the questions any provider should ask before treatment.

DEKA Onda uses microwaves at 2.45 GHz, delivered through a system called Coolwaves. At this frequency, energy is absorbed more readily by fat than by the skin above, so a larger share reaches the subcutaneous fat layer instead of being spent on the way down. Contact cooling protects the skin surface throughout.
Once there, the heat acts on three structures together: fat cells, the fibrous septa that link fat lobules and pull on the skin to create the dimpling of cellulite, and dermal collagen, which tightens and remodels over the following weeks. An international advisory board has published recommendations on its use for localised fat and cellulite.
Onda is used for areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs and arms, and for cellulite. Treatment feels like a strong, moving warmth, and most people return to normal activities the same day.
Redness and warmth settle within hours; some people notice tenderness, swelling or small firm areas that fade over days to weeks. Sessions are spaced weeks apart, and change develops gradually as fat is cleared and collagen remodels, so it is reviewed with photographs in fixed lighting rather than judged the next morning.
The 4K Body Lift is a high-definition body sculpting protocol developed by Dr Sin Yong and delivered on the CLASSYS Secret Duo platform. Insulated radiofrequency microneedles are placed into mapped zones, at the depth where the fibrous septa meet the superficial fat. A second, shallower pass then treats the deep dermis so the skin tightens over the new contour.
Because energy is delivered at chosen depths in mapped points, it suits areas that need both fat reduction and skin firming, such as the lower abdomen after pregnancy, the flanks, inner thighs and upper arms. Most people need one to three sessions spaced about six weeks apart. Local numbing is used, and bruising, if it occurs, usually settles within two weeks. It is not weight loss and does not replace surgery where there is a large amount of loose skin.
Because energy is placed through fine needles, the treatment is more involved on the day than an external applicator, and the area may feel tender and swollen for several days. In return, the doctor controls depth and placement point by point, which is useful in areas with uneven fat, mixed laxity or previous treatments. Change is often visible from a few days and continues to develop over the following six weeks as the tissue remodels.

The table is a simplification. The right choice depends on the area, how much of the problem is fat versus loose skin or cellulite, and your tolerance for recovery. The Onda vs fat freezing vs 4K Body Lift article looks at specific body areas.
Dr Sin Yong begins by examining the area standing and relaxed, then with a gentle pinch, to judge how much is fat, how much is skin laxity and how much is cellulite. Photographs in fixed lighting are taken so later sessions can be compared fairly. Medical history, weight stability and goals are discussed, including whether a medical weight-management plan or a surgical opinion would serve you better.
If fat freezing is what you want, you can be referred elsewhere, and the risks above should be part of that decision. Treatments IN Eternity Clinic has chosen not to offer are listed on treatments we do not offer. For specific areas, see love handles and stubborn fat.
No. IN Eternity Clinic does not offer cryolipolysis. Body contouring at the clinic uses DEKA Onda Pro microwave technology and the 4K Body Lift on CLASSYS Secret Duo. Dr Sin Yong can explain how these compare with fat freezing for your area.
Fat cells damaged by cold are cleared gradually by the body, so change develops over about two to three months rather than days. Results are usually assessed at around three months, and some people choose a second session on the same area after that review.
A rare complication of fat freezing in which the treated area becomes larger and firmer over the months after treatment, often in the shape of the applicator. It does not resolve on its own and usually needs liposuction to correct.
No. Both use electromagnetic energy, but at different frequencies. At 2.45 GHz, microwaves are absorbed more by fat than by skin, while radiofrequency tends to deposit more energy in the skin. The 4K Body Lift delivers radiofrequency through microneedles at chosen depths.
Where skin laxity is part of the problem, treatments that heat collagen, such as Onda or the 4K Body Lift, are usually more relevant than fat freezing, which targets fat only. Significant excess skin, for example after large weight loss, may need a surgical opinion instead.
Cellulite involves fibrous septa and skin laxity as well as fat. Onda is designed to act on the septa and dermis as well as fat, and is used in cellulite protocols at IN Eternity Clinic. Fat freezing is not designed as a cellulite treatment.
Fees depend on the treatment chosen, the number and size of areas, and the number of sessions. Comparing price per session can mislead, because the treatments work differently and need different numbers of sessions. Fees are explained at consultation once the plan is clear.
