In short

HIFU results build gradually. Focused ultrasound heats small points in the dermis and the SMAS support layer, starting a collagen repair process. Early tightness is mostly swelling; visible firming of the jawline, under-chin and brow usually shows from six to twelve weeks and is judged at about three months. Results are modest and suit mild to moderate laxity, not heavy jowls, fat or volume loss.

Key facts
  • What HIFU does: focused ultrasound heats points at 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 mm, including the SMAS, with the surface intact.
  • When results show: from about six weeks; judged around three months; can continue to about six months.
  • Main benefits: firmer jawline, slightly lifted brow, less loose skin under the chin, smoother texture.
  • Limits: modest change; not for heavy skin excess, fat or volume loss.
  • How it is judged: standardised photographs of your own face, before treatment and at review.
  • Device at IN: CLASSYS Ultraformer MPT, planned and supervised by the doctor.
  • Consultation: S$120, waived with any medical treatment. IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza.
The short answer

What results can HIFU give, and when do they show?

HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) converges ultrasound energy into small heated points at set depths under the skin, usually 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm in the dermis and 4.5 mm at the SMAS, the fibrous support layer a surgical facelift repositions. Each point contracts collagen and starts a wound-healing response that lays down new collagen over the following months. The skin surface is left intact.

That mechanism sets the timeline. Some people notice slight tightness within days, mostly from swelling. The real change builds from about the sixth week, is usually judged at around three months, and can continue to about six months. Typical results are a firmer jawline, a slightly lifted brow, less loose skin under the chin and smoother skin texture; they are modest and gradual, and they vary between people.

At IN Eternity Clinic, HIFU is delivered on the CLASSYS Ultraformer MPT after assessment by the doctor; see HIFU in Singapore for the treatment itself and skin tightening in Singapore for how it compares with radiofrequency and lasers. This page is about results: what changes, when, and how it is judged. It does not show patient photographs; IN Eternity Clinic does not publish patient photographs or patient endorsements to advertise treatment, in line with Singapore’s rules on healthcare advertising.

Timeline

HIFU results timeline: week by week

The early dip, when the swelling has gone but the collagen has not yet built, is normal. It is the main reason results are not judged in the first month. Most people return to normal activities the same day; more detail on recovery is in HIFU in Singapore.

Benefits

What are the benefits of HIFU?

Benefits are general. Whether HIFU suits your face is decided at assessment.
BenefitWhat it means in practiceThe limit
Reaches the SMASEnergy at 4.5 mm acts on the support layer a facelift repositions, not only the skinIt tightens; it does not reposition tissue the way surgery does
Surface left intactNo wounds, no peeling; make-up usually the same daySome redness, swelling and tenderness are normal for days
Gradual changeResults look like your own face on a good day, not a sudden changeYou wait weeks to months to see it
Often one sessionMany plans are a single session, with maintenance laterSome faces need a second session or a combination
Face and neckBrow, cheeks, jawline, under the chin and neck can be treatedVery thin areas and areas over nerves are treated conservatively
Combines wellPairs with radiofrequency for crepey skin, or skin boosters for qualityDoes not replace volume loss; that needs a different treatment

A systematic review and meta-analysis of HIFU for face and neck rejuvenation found it effective for improving laxity, with mostly short-lived side effects such as redness, swelling and discomfort. Prospective studies of micro-focused ultrasound have measured tightening of facial and neck skin and an elevated brow line, and studies in Asian skin have reported clinical and microscopic signs of collagen remodelling. These are real but modest effects, most suited to mild to moderate laxity.

Who sees more change

Why do HIFU results differ between people?

Age is less important than the cause of the change you see.
Tends to respond wellTends to respond less
Early jowling and a softening jawlineHeavy jowls and marked skin excess
Mild loose skin under the chinA double chin that is mostly fat
A slightly heavy browA face that looks tired mainly from volume loss
Reasonable skin thickness and qualityVery thin faces with little soft tissue
Stable weight, daily sun protectionOngoing weight change, heavy sun exposure, smoking

A lot of what people call sagging is not laxity at all. Fullness under the chin may be fat, which responds to fat-reducing energy rather than to HIFU; see HIFU for a double chin. Hollowing at the temples and cheeks is volume loss. Heavy jowls with skin excess may be beyond what an energy device can change, and a surgical opinion is more honest. Matching the treatment to the cause is the single biggest factor in what you see at three months.

“HIFU does not lift a face on the day. It starts a repair process, and the fair comparison is made three months later, in the same light, against your own photographs.”
— Dr Sin Yong, Medical Director, IN Eternity Clinic
Judging results

How are HIFU results measured fairly?

At the first visit, standardised photographs are taken from the front, at three-quarter angles and in profile, in fixed lighting, with the head in the same position. At review, usually around three months, the same photographs are repeated and compared with you side by side. Jawline contour, the angle under the chin and brow position are easier to judge this way than in a bathroom mirror, where the light and angle change every day.

Phone selfies are a poor record. Small changes in tilt, lens distance and lighting can make a jawline look sharper or softer than it is, which is also why other people’s photographs online tell you little about your own likely result. If the change at review is less than hoped for, the next step is discussed then: sometimes a second session, sometimes a different tool for the part of the problem HIFU did not address.

What Dr Sin Yong looks for

  • What has actually changed. Descent along the jaw, crepey skin, fat under the chin and volume loss can look alike in a selfie and need different treatments.
  • Soft-tissue thickness. Thin faces are treated conservatively at deep depths so they do not look gaunter.
  • Bone and nerve landmarks. Areas where energy lands close to bone or a nerve are mapped and treated with care.
  • Previous fillers or threads. Recent product or threads in the area change timing and depth.
  • Skin quality and sun habits. These decide how much collagen response to expect and how long it holds.
  • Whether a combination makes more sense. Some faces do better with radiofrequency for the skin, or volume for hollows, alongside or instead of HIFU.

When this is not cosmetic

When facial change is not ageing

Most gradual sagging is ageing. Some changes need a medical opinion before any lifting treatment.

These are investigated first. Cosmetic lifting can follow once the cause is clear.

Making it last

How long do HIFU results last?

The collagen made after HIFU is your own, and it ages with the rest of your face. Many people consider a maintenance session about once a year, but the interval depends on age, skin quality, sun exposure and weight stability, and it is set at review rather than fixed in advance. Daily sunscreen, a stable weight and not smoking help results hold longest.

Cost depends on the areas, the number of lines your tissue needs and whether HIFU is combined with other treatment; what sets it is explained in HIFU price in Singapore. The consultation fee at IN Eternity Clinic is S$120, waived with any medical treatment.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

When will I see HIFU results?

Some people notice slight tightness within days, mostly from swelling. Visible change in firmness usually builds from about six weeks and is judged at around three months, and collagen remodelling can continue to about six months.

Is HIFU worth it?

For mild to moderate laxity along the jaw, under the chin and at the brow, HIFU can give a modest, natural-looking firming without surgery or wounds. It is less suitable for heavy jowls, skin excess, fat or volume loss. Whether it is worth it for you depends on which of these is present.

How many HIFU sessions do I need?

Many plans are one session, reviewed at about three months, with maintenance often considered around a year later. Some faces benefit from a second session or from combining HIFU with radiofrequency or skin-quality treatment. The plan is set after assessment.

How long do HIFU results last?

Results vary with age, skin quality, sun exposure and weight. The new collagen ages with the rest of the face, so many people consider maintenance about once a year. Sunscreen, a stable weight and not smoking help results hold.

Can HIFU make my face look thinner or hollow?

It can if energy is placed too aggressively in a face with little soft tissue. That is why thin faces are treated conservatively at deep depths, and why volume loss is assessed separately before HIFU is planned.

Does HIFU work on the neck and double chin?

HIFU can firm loose skin under the chin and on the neck. If the fullness is mainly fat, fat-reducing energy is usually more useful, and a combination is common. The cause is confirmed at assessment.

Why are there no patient photographs on this page?

IN Eternity Clinic does not publish patient photographs or patient endorsements to advertise treatment, in line with Singapore’s rules on healthcare advertising. Your own result is judged with standardised photographs taken before treatment and at review, kept in your medical record.

What is the difference between HIFU and Ultherapy results?

Both use focused ultrasound at similar depths, and results follow the same timeline. Ultherapy adds real-time imaging to confirm depth during treatment; HIFU platforms such as the Ultraformer MPT use fixed-depth cartridges and offer a line mode many people find more comfortable.
