What is actually happening

Visible pore size is driven by follicular opening diameter, sebum output, loss of peri-follicular collagen support with age, and photodamage. Only some of those are modifiable.

How it is told apart

The common belief is that pores open and close, or that they are full of dirt. They do neither. A pore filled with oxidised sebum looks darker, not larger — which is why cleansing changes appearance without changing size.

Sebum output, distribution across the T-zone versus cheeks, whether photodamage or laxity is contributing, and skin thickness.

Approaches that stimulate peri-follicular collagen and regulate sebum reduce visible prominence. Claims of permanently shrinking pores overstate what is achievable.
