Arm Laser Hair Removal: Forearms, Full Arms, Hands and Fingers
Medical Director Dr Sin Yong explains arm laser hair removal: forearms or full arms, hands and fingers, sessions, settings for fine hair and sun-exposed skin.
WhatsApp to Enquire →Key facts ↓Arm laser hair removal treats the forearms, upper arms, hands and fingers over about six to eight sessions, six to eight weeks apart. Arm hair is often fine, so settings change as it thins; see laser hair removal in Singapore.
- A course, not one visit: in 144 Asian patients, hair reduction rose from about 32 in 100 after one treatment to 55 in 100 after three [1].
- A pulse for fine hair: the Clarity II offers a 1 ms pulse described for fine hair, and IntelliTrak roller delivery for even coverage [3].
- Nd:YAG for pigmented skin: a review of hair removal lasers concluded that 1,064 nm is preferred for pigmented skin [2].
- Hair gets finer as you go: in 150 people treated with long-pulsed Nd:YAG, regrowth was slower and finer in about 79 in 100 [5].
- Paradoxical growth is rare on the body: new or coarser hair near a treated area affects about 3 in 100 people overall, and is very rare outside the face and neck [6].
What does arm laser hair removal cover?
The forearms, the upper arms, or both as full arms, plus the backs of the hands and fingers. Each can be treated alone or together.
Most arm hair is fine to medium, and the forearms see the most sun in Singapore. Both points shape the plan: shorter pulses for finer hair, and the wavelength chosen for sun-exposed skin. Treatment uses the Lutronic Clarity II, with 755 nm alexandrite for fair to light olive skin and 1064 nm Nd:YAG for brown or tanned skin.
| Option | What is treated | Typical hair | Sessions, often | Interval |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Forearms | Wrist to elbow | Fine to medium; darker in men | About 6 to 8 | 6 to 8 weeks |
| Upper arms | Elbow to shoulder | Fine, lighter | About 6 to 8 or more | 6 to 8 weeks |
| Full arms | Wrist to shoulder | Mixed | About 6 to 8 | 6 to 8 weeks |
| Hands and fingers | Backs of the hands and fingers | Coarse to medium, sparse | About 6 to 8 | 6 to 8 weeks |
Should you treat the forearms or the full arms?
Treat the part that bothers you. Many people start with the forearms, where hair is darker and more visible, and add the upper arms later if wanted.
Upper-arm hair is often finer and lighter, which takes more sessions and may not respond if it is very light. In men, arm hair is usually coarser and denser across the whole arm. Arms are often planned with the underarms in the same visit; each area keeps its own interval. See underarm laser hair removal.
Which settings suit arm hair?
Usually a short to standard pulse, with 755 nm on fair to light olive skin and 1064 nm on brown or tanned skin.
Fine hair loses heat quickly and needs a short pulse; the Clarity II offers a 1 ms pulse for fine hair [3]. 1064 nm is preferred for pigmented skin [2]. Dr Sin Yong uses two wavelengths and varied settings to target coarse, medium and fine hair and the skin type; the two are not stacked on the same skin, because in a randomised trial combining them added pain and pigment change without extra benefit [4]. IntelliTrak roller delivery helps even coverage on longer areas [3]. More on fine hair is in laser hair removal for fine hair.
Can laser treat hair on the hands and fingers?
Yes. Hair on the backs of the hands and the fingers is usually sparse but dark, and responds well. Sessions take a few minutes.
The skin over the knuckles is thin and close to bone, so it can feel sharper; cooling helps. Remove rings before the session. Hands are in the sun most of the day, so skin type is checked carefully and sunscreen is reapplied after washing during the course.
“Arm hair is often fine, so it gets a shorter pulse and, where the skin allows, the 755 nm wavelength; the settings change again as it thins.”
How many sessions do arms need, and how far apart?
Usually about six to eight sessions, six to eight weeks apart. Fine, light upper-arm hair can need more, or may not respond.
Results build over a course: in Asian skin, hair reduction rose from about 32 in 100 after one treatment to 55 in 100 after three [1]. Regrowth is usually slower and finer as sessions go on [5], so the pulse is shortened. Spacing and session counts by area are compared in how many laser hair removal sessions.
Does arm laser hair removal hurt?
Most of the arm feels mild, a warm snap. The inner upper arm and the knuckles feel sharper.
Cryogen spray cools the skin just before each pulse [3]. Shave the day before so no hair sits above the skin, and say if an area feels too hot. Most people find sessions easier as the hair thins.
Can you treat tanned forearms?
Not over a fresh tan. The session is moved, or done at 1064 nm with lower energy, because tanned skin absorbs more of the light.
Forearms tan from driving, walking and outdoor sport, often more than people notice. Darker skin is more prone to brown marks after irritation [7], so skin type is checked at every visit. Use sunscreen on the forearms and hands during the course. Aftercare is in laser hair removal aftercare and planning for darker skin in laser hair removal for dark skin.
Can laser make arm hair thicker?
It is very rare on the arms. Paradoxical hair growth affects about 3 in 100 people overall, and is very rare outside the face and neck.
A systematic review found it mostly on the face and neck [6]. If light hair on the upper arms is very fine, it is usually left untreated rather than given low, ineffective heat. How long results last is covered in is laser hair removal permanent?.
What Dr Sin Yong looks for
- Your skin type and any recent tan on the forearms and hands.
- Whether the hair is coarse, medium or fine on each part of the arm.
- Very light upper-arm hair that may not respond.
- Moles, tattoos and freckles on the arms, which are avoided or checked first.
- How the hair changed since last time, so the pulse is shortened as it thins.
General clinical observations used at consultation; they describe what is checked, not any individual result.
Frequently asked questions
How many sessions does arm laser hair removal need?
Usually about six to eight, six to eight weeks apart. Very fine or light upper-arm hair can need more, or may not respond.
Is full arm laser hair removal worth it compared with forearms only?
It depends on where the hair bothers you. Forearm hair is usually darker and more visible; upper-arm hair is often finer and slower to respond.
Can fingers and hands be done with the arms?
Yes. The backs of the hands and fingers are short additions to an arm session.
Can I go in the sun after arm laser hair removal?
Wait until any redness has gone, and use sunscreen on the treated arms and hands. A tan before the next session may mean it is moved or done at gentler settings.
Does arm laser hair removal work on light hair?
Dark or medium arm hair responds; very light, blonde or grey hair does not. A test area shows whether borderline hair responds.
How much does arm laser hair removal cost?
It depends on forearms or full arms and the sessions your hair and skin need. At IN Eternity Clinic a S$120 consultation fee applies and is waived if you go ahead with any medical treatment.
Can men have arm laser hair removal?
Yes. Male arm hair is usually coarser and denser, and some men prefer to thin it rather than clear it.
