Leg Laser Hair Removal: Full Legs, Half Legs and What to Expect
Medical Director Dr Sin Yong explains full and half leg laser hair removal: sessions, spacing, settings as hair thins, tanned skin and ingrown hairs.
WhatsApp to Enquire →Key facts ↓Leg laser hair removal treats the lower legs, thighs or full legs over about six to eight sessions, six to eight weeks apart. Leg hair rests longer than facial hair, so sessions are spaced further apart.
- Both wavelengths work on legs: in a randomised trial of leg hair in skin types III and IV, four sessions eight weeks apart with alexandrite or Nd:YAG each reduced hair at 18 months; combining them added pain and pigment change without extra benefit [1].
- Nd:YAG for pigmented skin: a review of hair removal lasers concluded that the longer 1,064 nm wavelength is preferred for pigmented skin [2].
- Darker skin, conservative energy: conservative energy over multiple sessions improves safety and results in darker skin types [3].
- A course, not one visit: in 144 Asian patients, hair reduction rose from about 32 in 100 after one treatment to 55 in 100 after three [4].
- Even coverage on large areas: the Clarity II offers IntelliTrak, roller delivery that fires at a set overlap as the handpiece moves [5].
How does leg laser hair removal work?
Laser light is absorbed by the pigment in leg hair and heats the follicle; a course of about six to eight sessions, six to eight weeks apart, reduces regrowth.
Legs are a large area with mostly medium hair and a long resting phase, so the interval is wider than for the face or underarms. The approach and both wavelengths are described on laser hair removal in Singapore; more guides are under hair and skin quality.
| Option | What is treated | Sessions | Interval | Session length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lower legs | Knee to ankle | About 6 to 8 | 6 to 8 weeks | Shorter |
| Upper legs | Thigh to knee | About 6 to 8 | 6 to 8 weeks | Shorter |
| Full legs | Thigh to ankle | About 6 to 8 | 6 to 8 weeks | The longest single area for many women |
| Knees | Usually with lower legs | About 6 to 8 | 6 to 8 weeks | A few minutes |
| Feet and toes | Usually added to a leg | About 6 to 8 | 6 to 8 weeks | A few minutes |
Should you choose full legs or half legs?
Choose the area where the hair bothers you; many start with the lower legs, which are most visible, and add the thighs later.
Lower legs usually carry the darkest, most visible hair in women; thighs often have finer, lighter hair. In men, the whole leg is usually coarse and denser. Areas can be combined in one visit, each keeping its own interval. If the bikini line is also a concern, it is planned alongside; see Brazilian and bikini laser hair removal.
How many sessions do legs need, and how far apart?
Usually about six to eight sessions, six to eight weeks apart; returning sooner simply meets the same resting follicles again.
Only hairs in the growing phase respond, and leg hair spends longer resting than facial or underarm hair. In a randomised trial of leg hair, four sessions eight weeks apart with either wavelength reduced hair at 18 months [1]. Most people see patchier, slower regrowth after two or three sessions. Treated hairs shed over one to three weeks and can look as though they are still growing.
Which settings suit leg hair?
It depends on your skin and how coarse your leg hair is: 755 nm for fair to light olive skin, 1064 nm for brown or tanned skin, with the pulse matched to the hair.
Melanin absorbs 755 nm strongly, which suits finer leg hair on lighter skin; 1064 nm is preferred for pigmented skin [2], with conservative energy over more sessions in darker skin [3]. Dr Sin Yong uses two wavelengths and varied settings to target coarse, medium and fine hair, so the course is planned to clear leg hair as thoroughly as possible as it changes: longer pulses for coarse shin hair early on, shorter ones as regrowth thins. Both wavelengths are not fired over the same skin, because combining them added pain and pigment change without extra benefit [1]. IntelliTrak lets the handpiece roll across the leg at a set overlap, which helps even coverage with fewer missed stripes [5].
“Legs are not difficult; they are large. The skill is covering every centimetre evenly and spacing the visits to the hair, not to the calendar.”
Does leg laser hair removal hurt?
Most of the leg feels mild, a warm snap; the shins, knees and ankles, where skin lies close to bone, feel sharper.
Cryogen cooling before each pulse takes the edge off. Shave the day before so no hair sits above the skin, and say if any area feels too hot. Sessions usually feel easier as the hair thins.
Can laser help ingrown hairs and dark dots on the legs?
Often, yes: fewer and finer hairs mean fewer hairs curling back into the skin, and fewer dark stubble dots in the pores.
Dark dots on shaved legs are often trapped stubble or inflamed follicles, which tend to improve as hair is reduced. Rough, bumpy skin that is not hair-related, such as keratosis pilaris, is a different condition; see keratosis pilaris and ingrown hairs and razor bumps. Inflamed bumps are calmed before treatment.
Can you have leg laser hair removal with tanned skin?
Not over a fresh tan: the session is moved or done at 1064 nm with lower energy, because tanned skin absorbs more of the light.
Legs catch a lot of sun in Singapore. Darker skin is more prone to brown marks after irritation [7], so skin type is checked every visit. Book sessions before a beach holiday rather than straight after, use sunscreen on exposed treated skin, and avoid self-tan during the course. After a session, skip hot baths, saunas, hard exercise and pools for a day or two; see laser hair removal aftercare.
Is leg laser hair removal permanent?
It gives long-term reduction rather than the loss of every hair; leg hair usually holds its result well, and some people need occasional maintenance.
An evidence review found lasting partial reduction after repeated treatment, and no system that removes every hair for good [6]. Legs are less hormone-driven than the face, so maintenance is usually lighter. More in is laser hair removal permanent?.
What Dr Sin Yong looks for
- Your skin type and any recent tan on the legs, which decide 755 nm or 1064 nm and the energy.
- How coarse the hair is on the shins compared with the thighs.
- Ingrown hairs, folliculitis or dark dots, and whether they are hair-related.
- Moles, tattoos and veins on the legs, which are avoided or checked first.
- How your skin and hair responded last time, so the settings change as the hair thins.
General clinical observations used at consultation; they describe what is checked, not any individual result.
Frequently asked questions
How many sessions does full leg laser hair removal need?
Usually about six to eight, six to eight weeks apart. Darker skin treated conservatively and finer hair can need more; progress is reviewed each visit.
How long does a full leg laser session take?
Longer than smaller areas such as the underarms. IntelliTrak delivery helps cover large areas evenly; allow extra time at the first visit for assessment.
Can I shave my legs between laser sessions?
Yes. Shaving keeps the root in place, which the laser needs. Do not wax, pluck or epilate during the course.
Can I go to the beach after leg laser hair removal?
Wait until any redness has gone, and use sunscreen on the treated skin. A tan before the next session means it may be moved or done at gentler settings.
Does leg laser hair removal help strawberry legs?
It often helps when the dark dots come from stubble or inflamed follicles, because there are fewer hairs. Dots from other causes are assessed separately.
How much does leg laser hair removal cost?
It depends on full or half legs, the sessions your hair and skin need, and maintenance. At IN Eternity Clinic a S$120 consultation fee applies and is waived if you go ahead with any medical treatment.
Can men have leg laser hair removal?
Yes. Male leg hair is usually coarser and denser, so it may need more sessions, and some men prefer to thin the hair rather than clear it.
