Laser Hair Removal Aftercare: What to Do, Day by Day
Medical Director Dr Sin Yong explains what to do and avoid after laser hair removal, why treated hair seems to keep growing, and which signs need a call.
WhatsApp to Enquire →Key facts ↓Laser hair removal aftercare is simple: keep the area cool, avoid heat, sun and self-tan, and shave rather than wax or pluck. Redness and bumps settle within hours; treated hairs shed over one to three weeks.
- Side effects are usually low: an evidence review of 9 randomised and 21 controlled trials found postoperative side effects were low for all laser hair removal systems [1].
- Darker skin marks more easily: post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is more frequent and more severe in skin of colour, so heat, sun and friction after treatment are kept down [2].
- Conservative settings, more sessions: in darker skin types, conservative energy over multiple sessions improves both safety and results [3].
- More energy is not better: in a randomised trial with 18 months of follow-up, combining two wavelengths on the same leg added no benefit and caused more pigment change and pain [4].
- Watch for coarser hair at the edges: paradoxical hair growth is reported in 0.6 to 10 in 100 patients, mostly on the face and neck [5].
What should you do after laser hair removal?
Keep the area cool and clean, protect it from sun, and shave only. Avoid heat, sweat and friction for the rest of the day, and waxing or plucking for the whole course.
This page covers care between sessions. How laser hair removal works and how many sessions each area needs is on laser hair removal in Singapore. At IN Eternity Clinic, treatment is on the Lutronic Clarity II, with cryogen cooling before each pulse. Related guides are under hair and skin quality.
| When | What you usually see | Do | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 0 | Redness, small bumps around follicles, warmth | Cool compress, gentle wash, loose clothing | Hot showers, saunas, gym, perfumed products on the area |
| Days 1 to 3 | Skin usually calm | Shave if needed once comfortable; sunscreen on exposed areas | Sun, self-tan, scrubs, waxing, plucking |
| Week 1 | Treated hairs start to shed and can look as if still growing | Gentle washing helps them come away | Pulling hairs out |
| Weeks 2 to 4 | Smoother patches; resting follicles reappear later | Keep shaving only | Tanning before the next session |
| Next session | Four to eight weeks after the last | Shave a day before; report any reaction | Waxing or threading in between |
Is redness and bumpy skin normal after laser hair removal?
Yes. Small raised bumps around each follicle and pinkness are the expected response to heat, and they usually settle within a few hours.
A cool compress, loose clothing and a fragrance-free moisturiser are enough. Skip the gym, saunas, hot yoga and long hot showers on the treated area for the rest of the day; heat and sweat prolong redness and can irritate follicles. In Singapore’s heat, a walk outdoors in the afternoon counts too, so plan sessions for the evening if you can. Heat and post-laser care are covered in Singapore humidity and post-laser care.
Can I shave or wax after laser hair removal?
Shave, yes, once the skin is comfortable, usually from the next day. Wax, pluck, thread or use an epilator, no: the laser needs the hair root in the follicle at the next session.
- Shaving cuts hair at the surface and leaves the root for the laser; it is the right method throughout the course.
- Hair removal creams can irritate freshly treated skin; wait a few days and patch test.
- Waxing, plucking, threading and epilators remove the root, so that follicle is invisible to the next session; stop about four weeks before and for the whole course.
- Shave a day before each session, not on the day, so small nicks have closed.
Why does hair still seem to grow after laser hair removal?
Because treated hairs are being pushed out, not growing. Over one to three weeks they work their way out of the follicle and fall away, which can look like regrowth.
Gentle washing and a soft cloth help the loosened hairs come away; do not pull them. After shedding, smoother patches appear. Hairs that come through weeks later grew from follicles that were resting at the last session, which is why sessions are spaced four to eight weeks apart and a course is needed. An evidence review found that laser gives a partial reduction that improves with repeated treatment [1]. How long results last is in does laser hair removal last.
“Most problems after laser hair removal start outside the clinic: a tan, a wax between sessions, a hot workout that evening. The laser is the easy part; the weeks between sessions decide how smoothly the course goes.”
How long should I stay out of the sun after laser hair removal?
Avoid direct sun and self-tan on the treated area for about two weeks, and arrive at every session without a fresh tan. Tanned skin absorbs more of the laser and is more likely to darken or lighten.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is more frequent and more severe in skin of colour [2], and most skin in Singapore is Fitzpatrick type III to V. In darker skin, conservative settings over more sessions improve safety [3]. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed areas such as the face, arms and legs, and cover up at the beach or pool. Skin type is checked at every visit, because a holiday can change it.
When can I exercise, swim or use deodorant after laser hair removal?
Usually from the next day. Heat, chlorine and fragranced products can sting freshly treated skin for the first day, so they wait until the redness has settled.
| Activity | Usually OK from | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gym, running, hot yoga | The next day | Sweat and heat can prolong redness on day 0 |
| Swimming pools and the sea | After a day or two | Chlorine and salt can sting; sun protection at outdoor pools |
| Saunas and steam rooms | After two or three days | Heat is the main irritant |
| Deodorant (underarms) | The next day | Fragrance-free first if the skin stings |
| Make-up (face) | The next day | Clean brushes; gentle removal |
| Retinoids and exfoliating acids | After a few days, as advised | Paused around face sessions |

What side effects can happen after laser hair removal?
Most people have only short-lived redness. Less common are blisters or crusts, temporary darker or lighter patches, small inflamed spots around follicles, and rarely coarser hair at the edge of a treated area.
Most of these are linked to a recent tan, settings that do not match the skin, or heat soon after treatment. Combining wavelengths on the same skin, for example, added side effects without extra benefit in a randomised trial [4]. Paradoxical hair growth, finer hair turning coarser, is reported mostly on the face and neck [5]; tell the clinic if a treated area seems to grow thicker or denser hair.
Which signs after laser hair removal need a review?
Contact the clinic promptly with a photo if you notice any of the following. They are uncommon and easier to manage early.
- A blister, crust or weeping area.
- Pain, redness or swelling that increases after the first day.
- Dark or pale patches developing in the weeks after a session.
- Painful, pus-filled spots around follicles.
- Hair in a treated area that seems to be growing coarser or denser.
What Dr Sin Yong looks for
- Your skin type on the day, including any recent tan, which sets wavelength and energy.
- Whether you have waxed, plucked or threaded since the last session.
- Any reaction from the last session, such as blisters, marks or folliculitis.
- Medicines or skincare that make skin more light-sensitive.
- Hair colour and thickness, because white, grey and red hair do not respond.
- Signs of coarser hair at the edges of treated areas on the face or neck.
General clinical observations used at consultation; they describe what is checked, not any individual result.
Frequently asked questions
How long after laser hair removal can I shower?
You can shower the same day with lukewarm water and a gentle wash. Avoid very hot showers on the treated area for the rest of the day.
Can I wax between laser hair removal sessions?
No. Waxing, plucking and threading remove the hair root, so the next session cannot treat that follicle. Shave instead.
Why are there bumps after laser hair removal?
Small raised bumps around each follicle are a normal heat response and usually settle within a few hours.
When does hair fall out after laser hair removal?
Treated hairs usually shed over one to three weeks. They can look as if they are still growing while they are pushed out.
Can I go in the sun after laser hair removal?
Avoid direct sun and self-tan on the area for about two weeks, and use sunscreen on exposed skin. Arrive at each session without a fresh tan.
Can I use deodorant after underarm laser?
Usually from the next day. If the skin stings, use a fragrance-free product for a few days.
Can I exercise after laser hair removal?
Usually from the next day. Skip the gym, hot yoga and saunas on the day of treatment, when heat and sweat can prolong redness.
