Laser Hair Removal for Ingrown Hairs and Razor Bumps

Fewer, finer hairs means fewer hairs curling back into the skin.

Medical Director Dr Sin Yong explains how laser hair removal can reduce ingrown hairs and razor bumps on the beard line, neck, bikini line and underarms, and what to treat first.

In short

Laser hair removal for ingrown hairs reduces the number and thickness of hairs that curl back into the skin, so razor bumps often settle. Studies support long-pulsed Nd:YAG; see laser hair removal in Singapore.

Key facts
  • Fewer bumps after Nd:YAG: in 37 people with skin types IV to VI and razor bumps, papules at 90 days averaged about 1 in treated skin against about 7 in untreated skin [1].
  • Two sessions already helped: in 20 people with skin types V and VI, two Nd:YAG treatments three to four weeks apart reduced bumps and hairs on the jaw and neck for at least three months [2].
  • Laser plus cream: in 40 men with razor bumps, a long-pulsed Nd:YAG course combined with a topical cream improved bumps and hair density more than either alone [3].
  • Darker skin can be treated: newer long-pulsed lasers with better cooling allow people with razor bumps and darker skin to be treated [4].
  • Marks need their own care: post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is more frequent and more severe in darker skin [5].
The short answer

Does laser hair removal help ingrown hairs?

Often, yes. With fewer and finer hairs, fewer hairs curl back into the skin, so ingrown hairs and razor bumps usually become less frequent.

An ingrown hair forms when a cut or broken hair grows sideways or curls back into the skin, which reacts to it as a foreign body. Shaving coarse, curly hair to a sharp tip is the commonest trigger. Laser does not treat the bump itself; it reduces the hair that causes it. At IN Eternity Clinic this is done on the Lutronic Clarity II, choosing 755 nm or 1064 nm for the skin and varying the settings for coarse, medium and fine hair.

Razor bumps

What are razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae)?

Razor bumps are small, itchy or tender bumps where shaved, curly hairs re-enter the skin. They are common on the beard and neck, and on the bikini line.

The medical name is pseudofolliculitis barbae. It is most common with tightly curled hair, and more often leaves dark marks in darker skin [5]. Shaving closer, plucking or squeezing usually makes it worse. Reducing the hair removes the cause, which is why laser is used when the problem keeps returning. Other treatments for bumps and infection are covered in ingrown hair and razor bump treatment.

The evidence

What does the evidence show for laser and razor bumps?

Studies in darker skin types show fewer bumps after long-pulsed Nd:YAG, sometimes after only two sessions, with temporary side effects.

In 37 people with skin types IV to VI whose bumps had not settled with other care, treated skin under the chin averaged about 1 papule at 90 days against about 7 in untreated skin [1]. In 20 people with skin types V and VI, two treatments three to four weeks apart reduced bumps and hairs on the jaw and neck for at least three months; side effects were temporary darkening or lightening, redness and itch [2]. In 40 men, combining a laser course with a topical cream did better than either alone [3].

Which laser

Which laser is used for ingrown hairs?

Usually 1064 nm Nd:YAG for darker skin and the bikini line, and 755 nm alexandrite for coarse hair on fair to light olive skin.

Ingrown hairs are mostly coarse, so a longer pulse suits them; 1064 nm is preferred for pigmented skin [6]. The Clarity II also lists pseudofolliculitis barbae among its US indications [7]. As the hair thins over a course, the pulse is shortened. The wavelengths are compared in diode laser vs alexandrite vs Nd:YAG hair removal.

“Laser reduces the hairs that keep curling back into the skin; inflamed bumps are calmed first, and existing dark marks are treated separately.”
— Dr Sin Yong, Medical Director, IN Eternity Clinic
First steps

Should inflamed bumps settle before laser?

Yes. Active pustules, infection or very irritated skin are treated or left to calm first, because laser over inflamed skin raises the risk of marks.

That may mean a short break from shaving, switching to a trimmer, or treatment for infection before the first session. Once the skin is calm, laser reduces the hair so the bumps are less likely to return. Some people notice a few temporary bumps as treated hairs shed in the first weeks; these usually settle on their own.

Dark marks

Can laser hair removal clear dark marks left by ingrown hairs?

Not directly. It reduces new bumps, so fewer new marks form; existing marks fade over time and may need their own treatment.

Dark marks after inflammation are more frequent and more severe in darker skin [5]. Sun protection helps them fade. Options for marks are in post-inflammatory pigmentation and, for the underarms, dark underarms.

Beard line

What should men know before treating beard-line ingrowns?

Hair removed from a beard edge may not return, so the line is agreed and marked before the first pulse. The neck below it is the usual target.

Many men want a clean neckline and fewer bumps rather than no beard. Laser can thin the hair or clear the neck while the beard above stays. See laser hair removal for men and men's aesthetic treatments.

Bikini and underarms

How are bikini and underarm ingrowns planned?

Usually with 1064 nm on the thinner, darker skin of the bikini line, and by skin type for the underarms, with the area calm before each session.

Shave the day before with a fresh blade or use a trimmer, and avoid waxing during the course. See Brazilian and bikini laser hair removal, underarm laser hair removal and shaving before laser hair removal.

What Dr Sin Yong looks for

  • Whether the bumps come from ingrown hairs, or from another cause such as folliculitis or keratosis pilaris.
  • Active infection or inflammation that should be treated first.
  • Your skin type and any dark marks, which set the wavelength and energy.
  • For men, where the beard line should sit before any hair is removed.
  • How the bumps and hair changed since the last session.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Will laser hair removal stop ingrown hairs?

It usually reduces them, often markedly, because there are fewer and finer hairs to curl back into the skin. A few may still appear, especially in hormone-driven areas.

How many sessions does it take to reduce ingrown hairs?

Many people notice fewer bumps after two or three sessions. A full course is often six to eight or more, depending on the area and skin type.

Is laser safe for razor bumps on dark skin?

It can be, with 1064 nm Nd:YAG, cooling and conservative energy. Studies in skin types IV to VI reported temporary side effects such as darkening or lightening.

Can I have laser if I have an ingrown hair right now?

A few quiet ingrown hairs are not a problem. Infected or very inflamed areas are treated or left to settle first.

Do bumps get worse after laser?

Some people see a few temporary bumps as treated hairs shed. They usually settle within days; tell the clinic if they become painful or pus-filled.

Does laser help ingrown hairs on the bikini line?

Often, yes. Bikini hair is coarse and curly, and reducing it usually means fewer ingrown hairs. The thin, darker skin is often treated at 1064 nm.

Will laser remove the dark spots from old ingrown hairs?

Not directly. It prevents new bumps, and existing marks fade over time or with their own treatment.
