In short

Shaving before laser hair removal is done the day before, so the root stays in place while no hair sits above the skin. Stop waxing, plucking and epilating at least four weeks ahead; see laser hair removal in Singapore.

Key facts
  • Shave the day before: shave the treatment area the day before the appointment [1].
  • Stop pulling hair out: stop waxing, plucking or electrolysis at least four weeks before treatment [1].
  • No tan, no self-tan: avoid sun exposure, tanning beds and sunless tanners before treatment [1].
  • Cooling protects the surface: the Clarity II sprays cryogen on the skin just before each pulse [4].
  • Pigment marks after irritation: post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is more frequent and more severe in darker skin, so irritated skin is left to settle first [5].
The short answer

Should you shave before laser hair removal?

Yes. Shave the area the day before your session. The root stays in the follicle for the laser to target, and no hair is left above the skin to scorch.

Laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and conducted down to the root. Hair standing above the skin absorbs light at the surface instead, which wastes energy, can singe and sting, and can leave small burns. Shaving the day before, about 24 hours ahead, removes that surface hair while giving any razor irritation time to settle [1]. The table sets out what is and is not allowed before and during a course on the Lutronic Clarity II.

Waxing and plucking

Why should you not wax or pluck before laser hair removal?

Because waxing, plucking, threading and epilators pull the hair out with its root, leaving nothing in the follicle for the laser to heat.

The laser needs a pigmented hair in the follicle, ideally in its growing phase. After waxing, the follicle may sit empty for weeks, and a session in that window reaches far fewer hairs. Stopping at least four weeks before treatment lets the hair grow back into the follicle [1]. If you have waxed recently, the first session is simply booked a little later.

Timing

How long before laser hair removal should you shave?

The day before is the usual advice. Shaving on the morning of the session also works if your skin does not react to the razor.

Shaving 24 hours ahead gives small nicks and razor redness time to calm, which matters on the bikini line, underarms and neck. Shaving much earlier, three or four days before, leaves stubble long enough to absorb light at the surface. If you shave on the day, do it gently with a fresh blade and no perfumed products.

Technique

How should you shave before a laser session?

Use a clean, sharp razor or an electric shaver, shave in the direction of growth, and avoid broken, inflamed or sunburnt skin.

  • Shave the whole area to be treated, including edges such as the bikini line or the back of the thighs.
  • An electric shaver or trimmer is gentler if you get razor bumps or ingrown hairs.
  • Do not apply perfumed lotion, deodorant or make-up to the area on the day of treatment.
  • If you cannot reach an area, such as the back, mention it when you book, so it can be shaved before treatment.
  • Skip exfoliating scrubs and acids on the area for a few days before.

Areas with frequent razor bumps are covered in laser hair removal for ingrown hairs.

“Shave the day before, so no hair sits above the skin and the root is still there for the laser.”

Between sessions

Can you shave between laser hair removal sessions?

Yes. Shaving is the right way to manage hair during a course. It does not make hair grow back thicker or darker.

Treated hairs shed over one to three weeks; shaving or a gentle wash helps them along. Keep pulling methods off the area until the course is finished. Most patients have sessions every four to six weeks [2], and shaving in between keeps the skin ready. Shaving is short-lived, while an evidence review found laser superior to shaving, waxing and electrolysis for hair reduction [6]. Spacing by area is in how often should you do laser hair removal.

Other preparation

What else should you do before laser hair removal?

Keep the area out of the sun, avoid self-tan, tell the clinic about medicines and recent acne tablets, and arrive with clean skin.

Tanned skin absorbs more of the light, so avoid sun exposure, tanning beds and sunless tanners before treatment [1]; if the skin is darker on the day, the 1064 nm wavelength preferred for pigmented skin [3] is used at lower energy. Medicines that make the skin sensitive to light, and recent acne tablets, can change the plan, so mention them. Darker skin is more prone to marks after irritation [5], so inflamed bumps are calmed first. Aftercare is in laser hair removal aftercare.

Sensitive areas

Is shaving different for the bikini line and underarms?

Only in care: these areas have thin skin and coarse, curly hair, so a fresh blade, the day-before timing and an electric trimmer where bumps form all help.

For a Brazilian, shave as much of the area as you want treated, and say if any part is hard to reach. For underarms, avoid deodorant on the day. See Brazilian and bikini laser hair removal and underarm laser hair removal.

At assessment

What Dr Sin Yong looks for

  • Whether the area is shaved closely enough, with no long hair above the skin.
  • Razor bumps, nicks or irritation that should settle before the laser.
  • Any recent waxing, plucking or threading, which would leave too few hairs to treat.
  • Recent sun, tanning or self-tan on the area.
  • Medicines that make skin sensitive to light, and recent acne tablets.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I forget to shave before laser hair removal?

Long hair above the skin absorbs the light at the surface and can singe or sting. The area has to be shaved before it is treated, so mention it on arrival.

Can I shave on the day of laser hair removal?

Yes, if your skin does not react to shaving. The day before is preferred, because it gives razor irritation time to settle.

How long before laser should I stop waxing?

At least four weeks before, and not at all during the course. Waxing removes the root, which the laser needs.

Can I use hair removal cream before laser?

Not in the days before a session, because it can irritate the skin. Shaving is the usual method during a course.

Should I trim or shave before laser?

Shave if you can. A close trim is an option if shaving causes bumps, as long as no long hair is left above the skin.

Does shaving between sessions make hair thicker?

No. Shaving cuts the hair at the surface and does not change the follicle, so it does not make hair thicker or darker.

Should I shave before a laser hair removal consultation?

It helps to leave a little visible hair for the first assessment, so the colour and thickness can be judged, unless a session is planned the same day.
