Full Body Laser Hair Removal: What It Includes and How It Is Staged
Medical Director Dr Sin Yong explains what full body laser hair removal usually includes, how it is staged across visits, and the safety checks for each area.
WhatsApp to Enquire →Key facts ↓Full body laser hair removal usually means the face, underarms, arms, legs and bikini line, and for men the chest, abdomen and back. It is staged over visits, each area on its own interval; see laser hair removal in Singapore.
- Side effects are usually short-lived: a review of laser hair removal found a low overall rate of adverse effects, mostly temporary and minor, and more common in darker skin [1].
- Wavelength matters in darker skin: pigment change reached up to 19 in 100 with shorter-wavelength lasers, particularly in darker skin, and 2 to 3 in 100 with Nd:YAG [1].
- Even coverage on large areas: the Clarity II offers IntelliTrak, roller delivery that fires at a set overlap as the handpiece moves [3].
- Paradoxical growth is rare on the body: it affects about 3 in 100 people overall, and is very rare outside the face and neck [4].
- Who operates matters: in 175 US laser-injury legal cases, laser hair removal was the commonest procedure, with a growing share involving non-physician operators [2].
What does full body laser hair removal include?
Usually the face, underarms, arms, legs and bikini line; for men, often the chest, abdomen, back and shoulders too. The exact list is agreed at assessment.
“Full body” is a plan rather than a single treatment. Each area has its own hair, skin and growth cycle, so each keeps its own wavelength, settings and interval on the Lutronic Clarity II. Some areas, such as inside the nose or the eyelids, are never treated.
| Area group | Includes | Typical hair | Interval | Safety note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Face | Upper lip, chin, jaw, sideburns, neck | Fine to medium, hormonal | 4 to 6 weeks | Eyes shielded; nothing above or below the brows |
| Underarms | Both underarms | Coarse, dark | 4 to 6 weeks | Skin often darker; no deodorant on the day |
| Bikini and Brazilian | Bikini line to full Brazilian | Coarse, dense | 4 to 8 weeks | Thin skin; often 1064 nm |
| Arms and hands | Forearms, upper arms, hands, fingers | Fine to medium | 6 to 8 weeks | Sun-exposed; tan checked |
| Legs and feet | Thighs, knees, lower legs, feet, toes | Medium | 6 to 8 weeks | Large area; IntelliTrak delivery |
| Torso (often men) | Chest, abdomen, back, shoulders | Coarse, dense | 6 to 8 weeks | Moles and tattoos avoided |
Can full body laser hair removal be done in one visit?
Sometimes, for lighter plans, but it is usually staged. Areas on different intervals fall due at different times, and comfort matters over a long session.
A first visit often treats a smaller set of areas, so your skin’s response can be seen before larger areas are added. After that, areas that share an interval are grouped: for example the face and underarms every four to six weeks, and the legs, arms and back every six to eight. Some visits therefore include more areas than others.
How is a full body plan staged over a course?
By interval and response: faster-cycling areas come more often, slower ones less often, and settings change as each area’s hair thins.
| Stage | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| Assessment | Skin type, hair in each area, medical history, moles and tattoos mapped; test spot if borderline |
| First visits | A smaller set of areas, then more added once the skin’s response is known |
| Middle of the course | Areas grouped by interval; settings adjusted as hair thins |
| Late sessions | Shorter pulses for finer regrowth; areas finishing at different times |
| After the course | Maintenance only where hair returns, often hormone-driven areas |
Areas finish at different times; legs and underarms often hold their result well, while the face and bikini line more often need maintenance. Spacing by area is in how often should you do laser hair removal.
How are the eyes protected during laser hair removal?
Everyone in the room wears eye protection matched to the laser wavelength, and the area around the eyes is not treated.
Laser light reflected or aimed near the eye can injure it, so protective goggles or shields are worn for every area, not only the face. On the face, treatment covers the lip, chin, jaw, sideburns and the area between the brows only, never the eyelids or above or below the brow line.
“Each area keeps its own wavelength, settings and interval, so a full body plan is staged rather than done all at once.”
Which areas need extra care?
Thin or darker skin, sun-exposed areas, and skin with moles, tattoos or active irritation. Each is planned on its own.
- Bikini and genital skin: thinner and often darker, so 1064 nm and conservative energy are common. See Brazilian and bikini laser hair removal.
- Face and neck: where paradoxical growth is mostly seen [4], so fine down is usually left alone. See laser hair removal for the face.
- Arms, legs and back: large and often sun-exposed; tanned skin is moved or treated at gentler settings [8].
- Moles and tattoos: avoided or covered, because pigment there absorbs the light.
- Men’s chest, back and beard line: coarse, dense hair; the beard line is agreed first. See laser hair removal for men.
Is full body laser hair removal suitable for darker skin?
Yes, with the wavelength chosen for the skin: 1064 nm Nd:YAG with longer pulses, cooling and conservative energy for brown and deep brown skin.
Conservative energy over more sessions improves safety in darker skin [5], and pigment change is less common with Nd:YAG than with shorter wavelengths [1]. The two wavelengths are not stacked on the same skin [6]. Planning for darker skin is covered in laser hair removal for dark skin.
How long does a full body course take?
Often around a year, because each area needs about six to eight sessions spaced four to eight weeks apart.
Facial and hormone-driven areas may continue longer. An evidence review found lasting partial reduction after repeated treatment, and no system that removes every hair for good [7], so occasional maintenance is part of the long term for some areas. What sets the total is explained in laser hair removal cost in Singapore.
What Dr Sin Yong looks for
- Which areas matter to you, and which can wait or be left alone.
- Your skin type in each area, since sun-exposed and covered skin can differ.
- Moles, tattoos, ingrown hairs and irritated skin to avoid or treat first.
- Signs of hormone-driven hair that will need more sessions.
- How your skin responded at the first visit, before larger areas are added.
General clinical observations used at consultation; they describe what is checked, not any individual result.
Frequently asked questions
What is included in full body laser hair removal?
Usually the face, underarms, arms, legs and bikini line, and for men often the chest, abdomen and back. The list is agreed at assessment.
How long does a full body laser session take?
It depends on how many areas are due that day. Areas on different intervals fall due at different times, so some visits are longer than others.
How many sessions does full body laser hair removal need?
Each area usually needs about six to eight sessions, and the face and hormone-driven areas often more. The course often runs around a year.
Is full body laser hair removal safe?
It can be, when each area gets settings suited to its skin and hair, eyes are protected, and moles and tattoos are avoided. Most side effects are short-lived.
Can I do full body laser hair removal with darker skin?
Yes, usually with 1064 nm Nd:YAG, longer pulses, cooling and conservative energy. A test spot is used when the skin type is borderline.
Can the genital area be treated?
The bikini line and Brazilian area can be treated, with conservative settings on the thinner, darker skin. See Brazilian and bikini laser hair removal.
How much does full body laser hair removal cost?
It depends on the areas and the sessions each needs. At IN Eternity Clinic a S$120 consultation fee applies and is waived if you go ahead with any medical treatment.
