In short

Thermage downtime is usually short: pink, warm, slightly swollen skin for a few hours and mild tenderness for a day or two; eyelids can stay puffy for a day or two. Most people work the same day.

Key facts
  • Swelling and redness are the usual effects: in 50 patients given one monopolar radiofrequency treatment to the cheeks or neck and followed for six months, redness and swelling were common, altered sensation was rare, and there was no scarring or pigment change [1].
  • Lower energy, more passes, less pain: in a survey of 5,700 facial treatments, the share of patients who found treatment too painful fell from 45 in 100 to 5 in 100 after a switch to a low-energy, multiple-pass technique guided by heat feedback [2].
  • Eyelids without anaesthesia: a multicentre trial treated 72 people with a small eyelid tip in one session, without anaesthesia, and followed them for six months with no serious adverse effects reported [3].
  • Comparable to focused ultrasound: in a split-face trial of 20 adults, monopolar radiofrequency and focused ultrasound with imaging showed no significant difference in laxity scores, satisfaction or adverse events [4].
  • Cooling changes comfort: in 22 Asian women treated split-face, monopolar radiofrequency with continuous water cooling caused significantly less pain than cryogen spray cooling, with similar results [5].
The short answer

How much downtime does Thermage need?

Very little for most people. The skin is pink and warm for a few hours, may feel tender for a day or two, and make-up can usually go on the same day.

Thermage FLX heats the deep dermis with monopolar radiofrequency while cooling the surface, so the skin is not broken and there is nothing to heal on the outside. What the treatment does and who it suits is on Thermage in Singapore. More lifting guides are under lifting and tightening.

General ranges after one session. Settings are guided by your heat feedback, and recovery varies between people.

Day 0

What does the skin look like straight after Thermage?

Pink, warm and sometimes slightly swollen, like after a brisk workout. It usually settles within a few hours.

A full-face session, including numbing and marking, commonly takes around an hour or a little more. Numbing cream is applied beforehand for most areas, and each pulse comes with cooling and vibration. The console shows the pulse count, and heat levels are adjusted to your feedback. In a large survey, heat-feedback, low-energy multiple-pass treatment was linked with far fewer people finding the treatment too painful [2].

  • Do: wear sunscreen, keep skincare gentle, and drink water.
  • Avoid on the first day: saunas, hot yoga and long hot showers on the face.
  • Make-up: usually fine the same day.
Days 1 to 3

What happens on days 1 to 3 after Thermage?

Most people look normal. Some areas, especially along the jaw and over bone, feel tender to touch for a day or two, and a little swelling can show in the mornings.

Rarely, a faint grid pattern or a small blister appears where a pulse sat. Both usually heal; a blister should be shown to the clinic so it can be looked after. In one study of single monopolar radiofrequency treatments, redness and swelling were common and short-lived, and altered sensation was rare [1]. Normal exercise, work and social plans usually continue.

Eyes

How long is the downtime after Thermage Eyes?

Usually a day or two of puffy eyelids, more noticeable in the mornings. The skin around the eyes may look a little pink for a few hours.

For eye sessions, numbing drops and protective eye shields are used. A multicentre trial treated eyelids in one session without anaesthesia and reported no serious adverse effects over six months [3]. Sleeping with the head slightly raised and a cool compress help the puffiness settle. Contact lenses go back in once the eyes feel comfortable, as advised. Eye pain or blurred vision after an eye session is not normal and needs a same-day call. More on eyelids is in Thermage Eyes.

“Thermage is the treatment people can have at lunch and go back to work. The patience it needs is not in the week after; it is in the three to six months before you judge it.”

Week 1 to month 6

When will I see results after Thermage?

Some people notice slight firming straight away, but the main change builds over three to six months as new collagen forms. Nothing much changes visibly in weeks two to four.

A general timeline from the clinic’s Thermage page. How much changes varies between people.
WhenWhat you may noticeWhat to do
Day 0Pink and warm, sometimes slightly swollenSunscreen; avoid saunas and hot yoga
Days 1 to 3Mild tenderness in some areasNormal routine; gentle skincare
Week 1Back to normal for most peopleReport any blister, dent or numb patch
Weeks 2 to 4Little visible change yetAvoid judging the result
Months 3 to 6Firmness buildsReview at about six months
About a yearAgeing carries onA repeat is often advised

That is why Thermage is usually a single full session, with a review at about six months and a repeat at about a year, rather than a short course. A second session within a few months adds heat to tissue that is still remodelling without speeding the result. Costs are explained separately in Thermage cost in Singapore.

Compared

Is Thermage downtime shorter than HIFU or lasers?

It is similar to HIFU and to the VF Lift – Vertical Facelift, and much shorter than resurfacing lasers, because none of these breaks the skin surface.

General orientation, not a ranking; the treatment follows the face.
TreatmentWhat it does to the surfaceTypical downtime
Thermage FLXHeats the deep dermis; surface cooledHours of pinkness; tenderness for a day or two
VF Lift – Vertical Facelift (Volnewmer)Monopolar radiofrequency with water coolingMild redness and warmth; possible tenderness along the jaw
HIFU (Ultraformer MPT)Focused heat points at depthRedness and tenderness for days; occasional bruising
Fractional CO2 laserVaporises columns of skinAbout a week of crusting, pink for weeks

In a split-face trial, monopolar radiofrequency and focused ultrasound with imaging showed no significant difference in adverse events [4]. How Thermage and Volnewmer differ is set out in Volnewmer vs Thermage, and HIFU’s side effects in HIFU side effects.

Planning

Can I have Thermage before an event or a flight?

Usually yes for social plans, because visible downtime is short. For an eye session, allow a couple of days for puffiness; for a result you want to show, allow three to six months.

  • Events: a few days is usually enough for the face; a week is safer after an eye session.
  • Flights: fine after the first day; drink water and keep skincare gentle.
  • Sun and heat: sunscreen daily and no saunas on the first day; in skin types III to V, irritation and heat can contribute to dark marks, which are more frequent in skin of colour [6].
  • Other treatments: recent fillers, threads or other energy treatments change the timing; tell the clinic.
When to call

Which signs after Thermage are not normal?

Contact the clinic on +65 8815 3008 or WhatsApp if you notice any of these. They are uncommon and easier to manage early.

  • A blister, or a raw or crusted spot.
  • A dent or hollow that appears in the weeks after treatment.
  • Numbness that spreads or does not improve.
  • Eye pain or blurred vision after an eye session.
  • Redness, warmth or swelling that spreads or increases after the second day.

What Dr Sin Yong looks for

  • Where the laxity sits, and whether it is skin, deeper support or volume that has changed.
  • How much fat covers the cheeks and jaw, because very lean faces are treated more carefully.
  • The eyelids: crepey upper or lower lid skin that may suit the Eye Tip.
  • Implants, pacemakers, recent fillers or threads, and any metal in the area.
  • Your diary, so an eye session or a combined plan is timed around events.
  • At review, how firmness has built against the first photographs before a repeat is suggested.

General clinical observations used at consultation; they describe what is checked, not any individual result.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is there any downtime after Thermage?

Very little. Most people have pink, warm skin for a few hours and mild tenderness for a day or two, and go back to work the same day.

Can I wear make-up after Thermage?

Usually yes, the same day, unless a blister or broken skin is present.

Can I exercise after Thermage?

Light exercise is usually fine the next day. Avoid saunas, hot yoga and long hot showers on the face on the first day.

Why is my face swollen after Thermage?

Mild swelling from the heat is common for a few hours to a day or two, especially in the mornings. Swelling that increases after the second day should be reviewed.

How long do eyelids stay puffy after Thermage Eyes?

Usually a day or two. Sleeping with the head slightly raised and a cool compress help.

When can I see Thermage results?

Some firming may be felt early, but the main change builds over three to six months as new collagen forms. Review is usually at about six months.

Does Thermage leave marks?

Rarely, a faint grid pattern or a small blister appears and usually heals. Tell the clinic so it can be checked.
