In short

Laser hair removal for small areas, such as nipple hair, the belly line, toes, fingers and the hairline, takes minutes per session but needs care over skin colour, hormones and lines. See laser hair removal in Singapore.

Key facts
  • Darker skin areas: the longer 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength is preferred for pigmented skin [1], such as the areola.
  • Conservative energy: conservative energy over several sessions improves safety in darker skin types [3].
  • Fine hair: the Clarity II offers a 1 ms pulse for fine hair, with cryogen cooling [2].
  • Face and neck edges: paradoxical growth affects about 3 in 100 people, and is very rare outside the face and neck [4].
  • Hormonal hair: in 60 women with PCOS, hair counts fell less than expected after six alexandrite sessions [6].
The short answer

Which small areas can laser hair removal treat?

Nipple and areola hair, the line of hair below the navel, toes, fingers and the backs of hands and feet, the hairline and nape, and between the brows.

Small areas take minutes per session, but each has its own catch: darker or thinner skin, hair that may be hormonal, or a line that should not move. On the Lutronic Clarity II, 755 nm or 1064 nm is chosen for the skin, and the pulse is set for coarse, medium or fine hair.

Typical starting points; your plan is set at assessment and reviewed at every visit.

Nipple hair

Can laser remove nipple and areola hair?

Yes. A few dark hairs around the nipple are common and respond to laser; because the areola is darker skin, 1064 nm and conservative energy are usually chosen.

Skin pigment competes with hair pigment, and the longer Nd:YAG wavelength is preferred for pigmented skin [1], with conservative energy over more sessions in darker skin [3]. The nipple itself is protected. New or increasing hair on the breast, especially with irregular periods or acne, is checked for a hormonal cause first. Treatment is postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Belly line

Can laser treat the line of hair below the navel?

Yes. It is a quick area, usually coarse to medium hair, treated at 755 nm or 1064 nm by skin type over about six to eight sessions.

In women, a dark line of hair from the navel downwards can be part of a hormonal pattern, so it is checked alongside the chin, jaw and chest. In women with PCOS, laser still reduced hair, but less than expected after six sessions, with longer hair-free spells as treatment continued [6]. The 2023 international guideline treats PCOS as a condition to assess and manage as a whole [7]. See laser hair removal for PCOS. For men, see laser hair removal for men.

Toes and fingers

Can you have laser hair removal on toes and fingers?

Yes. Toes and the backs of the feet are often added to a leg session; fingers and the backs of the hands get a short pulse for finer hair.

These areas take only minutes, but skin lies close to bone, so pulses feel sharper; cryogen cooling before each pulse helps [2]. Finger hair is often fine, so a short pulse is used, and the Clarity II offers a 1 ms pulse for fine hair [2]. Rings are removed, and the backs of the hands see daily sun, so sunscreen matters. See leg laser hair removal.

Hairline

Can laser shape the hairline or the nape of the neck?

It can, conservatively: the new line is agreed and marked first, because hair removed from a hairline may not return.

A low forehead hairline, stray hairs at the temples, and the nape of the neck can be treated. The face and neck are where paradoxical growth is most often reported [4,5], so fine, light hairs at the edge are usually left alone, and only the dark hairs that matter are targeted. See paradoxical hair growth after laser and laser hair removal for the face.

“A small area is still planned properly. We use two wavelengths, 755 nm and 1064 nm, and vary the settings for coarse, medium and fine hair and for your skin type.”

Sessions

How many sessions do small areas need?

About six to eight for most small areas, four to eight weeks apart; hormone-driven hair, such as nipple hair or a belly line in women, may need maintenance.

Size does not shorten the course, because only hairs in the growing phase respond each time. What a small area changes is time: each session takes minutes, and small areas are easy to add to a larger one in the same visit, each keeping its own interval.

Not treated

Which areas are not treated with laser?

The eyelids and brows themselves, inside the nose and ears, over moles and tattoos, and any area with active infection or broken skin.

Around the eyes, only the area between the brows is treated, and eyes are always shielded. Moles and tattoos absorb laser light and are avoided. White, grey and very fair hair on any area is not expected to respond, and you are told that before any course starts; see laser hair removal vs electrolysis.

At assessment

What Dr Sin Yong looks for

  • Whether the hair on a small area is new or increasing, which points to a hormonal check first.
  • Skin colour on the area, such as the darker areola, which favours 1064 nm.
  • How coarse or fine the hair is: finger hair is often fine, nipple hair coarse.
  • Where a hairline or beard edge should sit before any hair is removed.
  • Moles, tattoos, broken skin or infection on or near the area.

General clinical observations used at consultation; they describe what is checked, not any individual result.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal to have hair around the nipples?

Yes, a few dark hairs around the areola are common. New or increasing hair, especially with irregular periods or acne, is worth a hormonal check.

Is laser hair removal on the nipple area safe?

It can be, with 1064 nm and conservative energy for the darker skin of the areola, and the nipple protected. It is postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

How many sessions does a small area need?

Usually about six to eight, four to eight weeks apart. Hormone-driven areas may need maintenance.

Can I add small areas to a larger session?

Yes. Toes are often added to legs, and the belly line to the bikini area. Each area keeps its own interval.

Can laser remove hair on the fingers and toes?

Yes. These areas take minutes; they can feel sharper because skin lies close to bone, and cooling helps.

Can laser lower my hairline?

Laser can reduce hair below a hairline you choose, conservatively and after marking the line, because removed hair may not return. It cannot add hair.

How much does laser hair removal for a small area cost?

It depends on the area and the sessions needed. At IN Eternity Clinic a S$120 consultation fee applies and is waived if you go ahead with any medical treatment.
