What the research says about microneedling, and why it affects cost
- A 2018 review in Dermatologic Surgery found that microneedling improved scars, stretch marks and fine lines with quick recovery and limited side effects, and described it as an alternative to laser resurfacing and deep chemical peels [1]. Results build over a course, which is why most quotes are per course, not per visit.
- A 2008 paper in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery described percutaneous collagen induction as a way to prompt new collagen and elastin while keeping the outer layer of skin intact [2].
- A small case series in JAMA Dermatology (2014) reported facial granulomatous reactions after microneedling with cosmetic serums not made to go into the skin [3]. What is applied during the session, and sterile technique, are part of what a fair price pays for.
