Time Freeze vs HIFU vs Thermage

Which lifting treatment for which face

Three technologies, three target layers. The right one depends on what is sagging and what else needs fixing.

In short · Doctor’s answer

Time Freeze Laser LCLR® is a dual-wavelength laser protocol working at several dermal depths that lifts, reduces mapped fat zones, treats excess filler and improves skin quality. HIFU (Ultherapy, Ultraformer) focuses ultrasound heat at the SMAS layer to lift, with little effect on skin surface or fat. Thermage heats the dermis with radiofrequency for mild, even tightening. For early jowls with some fat and texture concerns, the laser protocol does the most in one session; for deep SMAS laxity with good skin, HIFU; for mild, even laxity (including the eyelids), Thermage. Dr Sin Yong chooses by zone, and the three are sometimes combined over time.

What the research says
  • Non-ablative fractional lasers remodel dermal collagen (Manstein 2004); micro-focused ultrasound produces thermal coagulation points at the SMAS with lifting over about 90 days (Fabi 2015); monopolar radiofrequency tightens through dermal collagen contraction and remodelling (Fitzpatrick 2003).

Combining

Combining them over time

The three are not rivals in the same session, but they can be sequenced: HIFU for the SMAS, then the laser protocol for the dermis, fat zones and skin quality some weeks later; or Thermage around the eyes and the laser protocol for the lower face. The order and the gaps are decided at assessment, and any filler or skin booster is timed to settle first.

Costs depend on the device, zones and sessions and are explained at the consultation; the consultation fee is S$120 and is waived when a treatment is started. Published price ranges for HIFU and Thermage in Singapore are in the price guide.

Technique

The device is only half of it

Each of the three is a tool. The result depends on whether the depth, energy and pattern were chosen for the face in front of the operator or applied as a preset. People who have had HIFU or Thermage with little change usually had a sound device and a generic plan. The LCLR protocol is built around the opposite: settings chosen zone by zone, adjusted during the session as the tissue responds. Results still vary between people and are never promised.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Time Freeze better than HIFU?

Different. HIFU reaches the SMAS and suits deep laxity with good skin; the laser protocol works across the dermis and superficial fat, improves skin quality and can treat excess filler. Some faces suit one, some the other, some both in sequence.

Can I do Thermage and Time Freeze together?

In sequence, yes: Thermage is often used around the eyes and the laser protocol for the lower face and neck, with a gap decided at assessment.

Which one has the least downtime?

All three have little. HIFU and Thermage are near-zero; the laser protocol has redness for one to two hours and tenderness in any fat zones for a day or two.

Which lasts longest?

Collagen built by any of the three is yours; ageing continues. HIFU is typically repeated every 12 to 18 months, Thermage every one to two years, the laser protocol as a spaced course with periodic maintenance.

Which is best for a double chin?

For a double chin with fat, the laser protocol (lipo-modelling plus lifting). For a double chin that is mainly loose skin, HIFU or the laser lifting pass. Bands need a muscle relaxant whichever device is used.

Why did my HIFU do nothing?

Most often the energy depth or pattern did not match the face, or the laxity was in a layer the device does not reach. The device itself is rarely the problem.
