Skin tag removal methods compared
How each way of removing a skin tag works, what healing looks like, and how the method is matched to the tag.
WhatsApp to Enquire →Skin tags can be removed by a fine snip, radiofrequency (electrosurgery), CO2 laser or freezing. Small stalked tags are usually snipped at the base; broader tags and clusters suit radiofrequency; flat tags and delicate sites such as eyelids suit CO2 laser. Freezing can leave pale marks in Asian skin and may need repeating. At IN Eternity Clinic every growth is checked first; see skin tag removal in Singapore.
Four methods side by side
| Method | Suits | How it works | Healing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fine snip | Small tags on a narrow stalk | Cut at the base under local numbing | Tiny crust, about a week |
| Radiofrequency | Broader bases, clusters on the neck | Heat seals and removes the tag | Small crusts, 5–10 days |
| CO2 laser | Flat tags, eyelids and face | Vaporises the tag in thin layers | Small crusts, then pink spots that fade |
| Freezing | Small tags; offered elsewhere, not used at IN Eternity for skin tags | Liquid nitrogen; tag drops off later | Blister; may need repeating; pale marks possible in darker skin |
What the studies show
- In a randomised trial comparing freezing with electrosurgery for skin tags and similar small growths, patient and doctor satisfaction was higher with electrosurgery during follow-up (Health Sci Rep 2024).
- In a case-control study, diabetes was found in 23% of people with skin tags against 8.5% of controls, and in 52% of those with more than 30 tags (Int J Dermatol 2007).
- A second case-control study found metabolic syndrome 11.13 times more likely in people with skin tags (Indian Dermatol Online J 2019). Many tags are a reason to check blood sugar.
Which method suits which tag?
- Eyelid tags: CO2 laser or a fine snip, with the eye protected; freezing is avoided near the eye.
- Neck and underarm clusters: radiofrequency or snip, often many tags in one visit.
- Large or bleeding tags: snip so the tissue can be sent for testing if needed.
- Darker skin: methods that avoid freezing lower the chance of pale or dark marks.
Home kits, threads and creams are not recommended: they can cause infection, bleeding and scarring, and they skip the check that a growth is really a skin tag. See skin tag removal at home vs clinic.
Skin tag removal methods: questions
What is the right way to remove skin tags?
There is no single method for every tag. Small stalked tags are usually snipped; broader tags and clusters suit radiofrequency; flat tags and eyelid tags suit CO2 laser. The choice depends on size, site and skin type.
Is laser or freezing better for skin tags?
For most tags in Asian skin, laser, radiofrequency or a snip are preferred because freezing can leave pale marks and may need repeating. In a randomised trial, satisfaction was higher with electrosurgery than freezing.
Can skin tags on the eyelid be removed?
Yes, by CO2 laser or a fine snip with the eye protected. Freezing is avoided near the eye.
Do skin tags grow back after removal?
A removed tag rarely returns in the same spot, but new tags can form nearby, particularly on the neck and underarms.
Should I check my blood sugar if I have many skin tags?
Multiple skin tags are linked with diabetes and metabolic syndrome in studies, so a blood sugar check is reasonable, especially with more than 30 tags.
