In short

CO2 laser downtime after a fractional session is usually five to seven days of swelling, pinpoint crusts and peeling, then pink skin that fades over weeks. Brown marks can appear in weeks two to six.

Key facts
  • Why it peels: the CO2 laser emits at 10,600 nm, a wavelength well absorbed by water, so it vaporises fine columns of skin rather than heating under an intact surface [1].
  • Darkening is the main trade-off in Asian skin: in 40 people with skin type IV treated for acne scars, brown marks after fractional CO2 appeared on 30 of 40 sides given plain ointment and 16 of 40 sides given a short anti-inflammatory cream first [2].
  • Settings change the risk: in 37 Chinese patients having fractional resurfacing, generalised darkening ran at about 7 in 100 sessions with one setting and 12 in 100 with a denser one [3].
  • CO2 is the more uncomfortable option: in a split-face trial of 24 Asian patients, fractional CO2 and erbium gave similar scar improvement, but CO2 caused more discomfort [4].
  • Some sites carry more risk: complications after fractional resurfacing are more likely in sensitive areas, in darker skin types and in people with medical risk factors [5].
The short answer

How long is CO2 laser downtime?

Plan on about a week before you look presentable, with pinkness for two to six weeks after that. Lighter settings heal faster; deep point shots into scars can add a day or two.

This page follows the days after a fractional CO2 session. The treatment itself, and who it suits, is described on CO2 laser in Singapore. At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong uses the DEKA SmartXide Tetra PRO; its S3 (SCAR3) mode places point shots into individual scar pits before a fractional pass, so the depth, and the downtime, follow what the scar needs. Other guides on scar treatment are collected under acne and acne scars.

General ranges after one session on the face. Your own settings, and so your downtime, are decided at assessment.

Day 0

What happens on the day of treatment?

Your skin feels hot, like a strong sunburn, and shows a fine grid of pinpoint marks. Swelling starts within hours.

Numbing cream goes on for about 45 to 60 minutes first, and the laser time itself is usually shorter than that. Straight afterwards the clinic applies cool compresses and the ointment you are given, and you go home with written aftercare and the clinic’s WhatsApp number. Expect some pinpoint oozing over the first evening. That fluid is part of the healing, not a sign of infection.

  • Do: keep the ointment on, sleep with your head slightly raised, and use a clean pillowcase.
  • Avoid: make-up, scrubs, active skincare, hot showers on the face and alcohol on the first night.
  • Cold sores: if you get them, say so before treatment; preventive medicine may be given.
Days 1 to 3

What do days 1 to 3 after CO2 laser look like?

These are usually the puffiest days. Swelling peaks, often around the eyes in the morning, and the grid of marks turns into fine brown crusts that feel like sandpaper.

The skin is tight and can itch. Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and the cleanser you were given, pat dry, and put the ointment back on so the surface never dries out. Most people stay at home or work remotely. Light walking is fine; the gym, saunas and swimming wait until the surface has closed, because sweat stings and pool water carries bacteria.

A cool compress helps swelling. Sleeping propped up on an extra pillow reduces puffiness around the eyes the next morning.

Days 4 to 7

When do the crusts come off after CO2 laser?

Usually between days five and seven. The crusts flake away by themselves and leave pink, smooth new skin underneath.

Let them go on their own. Picking pulls off crusts before the skin underneath is ready, and that is one of the commonest reasons for a dark mark or a small scar later. Once most crusts have gone, a gentle moisturiser can replace the ointment, mineral make-up can usually return, and you can go back to normal routines indoors.

Point-shot pits often keep a tiny crust for a few days longer than the surrounding skin. That is expected, because those spots were treated more deeply.

Weeks 2 to 6

Why is my skin still pink weeks after CO2 laser?

Because new skin has more blood vessels close to the surface while it remodels. Pinkness usually fades over two to six weeks and can be covered with make-up.

The pink stage is also when Asian skin is most likely to make extra pigment. In Singapore, where most skin is Fitzpatrick type III to V, that is the main trade-off of CO2 laser, and the reason aftercare in these weeks matters as much as the first few days [6].

Brown marks

Can CO2 laser cause dark marks, and what lowers the risk?

Yes. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a brown haze over treated skin, is the commonest lasting concern in darker skin, and it usually shows two to six weeks after a session.

Settings matter: in Asian patients having fractional resurfacing, denser treatment was linked with more darkening [3]. Aftercare matters too. In a split-face study in skin type IV, a short anti-inflammatory cream after fractional CO2 lowered the number of sides that darkened [2]. Whether that suits you is a doctor’s decision, made with your history.

  • Moderate density on darker skin, with depth chosen for the scar.
  • Spacing of about six to eight weeks between sessions.
  • No laser on tanned, sunburnt or inflamed skin.
  • Tinted sunscreen, hat and shade every day of the pink weeks, which in Singapore means every day.
  • Report a brown haze early. Early care shortens it; see post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Other areas

Is CO2 laser downtime different on the neck, chest or around the eyes?

Yes. Thinner skin heals more slowly and is treated more gently, so the neck and chest are usually set lighter and can stay pink for longer than the face.

Complications after fractional resurfacing are more likely in sensitive areas and in darker skin [5], which is why settings drop off the jawline onto the neck. Around the eyes, swelling is more visible in the first two mornings but the skin usually heals on the same timeline as the cheeks. Single lesions, such as a raised mole or a syringoma, leave a small scab for one to two weeks rather than a whole-face peel.

“Downtime is not a sign of how well the laser worked. It is the price of the depth we chose, so I set the depth for the scar and then plan the week around it, not the other way round.”
— Dr Sin Yong, Medical Director, IN Eternity Clinic
Compared

How does CO2 laser downtime compare with FSX, RF microneedling and pico?

CO2 has the longest downtime of the resurfacing options used at IN Eternity Clinic, and gives the most change per session. The others trade depth for a quicker return to work.

General orientation, not a ranking. Which suits your scars and your diary is decided at assessment.
TreatmentTypeTypical downtimeUsual number of sessions
Fractional CO2 (DEKA Tetra PRO)Ablative, 10,600 nmAbout 5 to 7 days, pink for weeksOften three or more for acne scars
FSX Laser (thulium and erbium glass)Non-ablativeA day or two of rednessA course
RF microneedlingNeedles with radiofrequency heatOne to three daysA course
Fractional picoNon-thermal, photoacousticHours to a daySeveral

In a split-face trial in Asian patients, fractional CO2 and fractional erbium improved acne scars to a similar degree, with more discomfort on the CO2 side [4]. How these choices fit acne scars is set out in CO2 vs RF microneedling vs pico for acne scars; the non-ablative route is on FSX Laser, and day-by-day recovery after needling is in RF microneedling downtime, day by day.

When to call

Which signs after CO2 laser are not normal?

Contact the clinic the same day if the skin gets worse rather than better after day three. Normal healing improves a little every day.

  • Increasing pain, heat or swelling after the first 72 hours.
  • Yellow crusts, pus, a bad smell or fever, which can mean infection.
  • Clusters of small blisters or sores, which can mean a cold sore outbreak.
  • Raw areas that are not covered by new skin by about day ten.
  • Raised, firm or itchy pink areas weeks later.

Message the clinic WhatsApp with a photo; an early review is better than waiting for the next appointment.

Planning

How should you plan CO2 laser around work, events and travel?

Keep the first week free of meetings, events and flights, and the following month free of beach holidays and long outdoor sessions.

  • Events: book CO2 at least four to six weeks before a wedding or photographs, so the pink stage has time to settle.
  • Travel: long flights dry the skin and holidays usually mean sun; plan travel for after the crusts and pack sunscreen.
  • Work: many people take two or three days off and work from home until the crusts have gone.
  • Humidity: sweat and heat sting healing skin; see Singapore humidity and post-laser care and post-laser scab care.

If you cannot take a week, say so at the consultation. A lighter pass, or a non-ablative option, may fit better, with more sessions instead.

At assessment

What Dr Sin Yong looks for

  • Your skin type and how easily your skin has darkened after spots, scratches or past treatments.
  • Recent sun or tanning, and any active acne or irritation in the area to be treated.
  • A history of cold sores, keloids or slow healing, and any recent oral acne treatment.
  • Which scars need point shots and which need only a fractional pass, because that sets the downtime.
  • How much downtime your work and diary can absorb, and whether a lighter option would serve you better.
  • At review, any brown haze or lingering redness that needs earlier care.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How many days of downtime does fractional CO2 laser need?

Usually five to seven days before most people go back to normal routines, with pinkness that fades over two to six weeks. Deeper point shots can add a day or two.

Can I go to work after CO2 laser?

Many people take two or three days off and work from home until the crusts have gone, around days five to seven. Make-up can usually cover the pink stage after that.

When can I wear make-up after CO2 laser?

Once the crusts have flaked off and the surface has closed, usually around days five to seven. Mineral make-up is gentler at first.

When can I exercise after CO2 laser?

Light walking is fine from the next day. Wait until the surface has closed, usually about a week, before the gym, swimming, saunas or hot yoga.

Is it normal to have brown spots after CO2 laser?

A brown haze can appear two to six weeks after treatment in Asian skin. It is usually temporary but should be reported early, because early care shortens it.

Why does my skin feel rough after CO2 laser?

The rough, sandpaper feel on days one to five is the fine crusting over each treated column. It sheds by itself; do not scrub or pick it.

How long after CO2 laser can I go in the sun?

Avoid direct sun for the pink weeks and use a tinted sunscreen daily for at least a month. In Singapore that means every day, including cloudy ones.
