Morpheus8 vs Secret RF vs Potenza: RF Microneedling Compared

Same principle, different needles, modes and depths.

RF microneedling platforms are marketed as if they were different treatments. Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic on Orchard Road explains what genuinely differs between them and what matters more than the brand.

Morpheus8, Secret RF and Potenza all deliver radiofrequency heat through fine needles into the dermis to remodel collagen. They differ in needle design, insulation, energy mode, frequency and maximum depth. For most facial concerns, skin type, needle choice, depth and settings matter more than the platform name, and the doctor’s judgement decides the outcome.

Key facts
  • Shared principle: needles enter the skin to a set depth and release radiofrequency energy, heating the dermis to trigger collagen remodelling with limited surface damage.
  • Morpheus8 (InMode): bipolar RF microneedling with a range of tips, including body tips that reach deeper than facial tips; aimed at dermal and subdermal remodelling.
  • Secret RF: bipolar RF microneedling offering insulated and non-insulated needle cartridges, widely used across Asia for scars and pores.
  • Potenza (Cynosure): RF microneedling offering both monopolar and bipolar modes at more than one frequency, with several tip options.
  • Secret Duo: the platform used at IN Eternity Clinic; it pairs RF microneedling with a 1540 nm non-ablative fractional laser.
  • Insulated needles: confine heat to the tip and protect the epidermis, useful in darker or pigment-prone skin.
  • Non-insulated needles: spread heat along the shaft for a broader effect, with more surface heating.
  • What decides results: correct diagnosis, depth matched to the target, conservative energy in Asian skin, and the number and spacing of sessions.

The common ground

What every RF microneedling platform does

RF microneedling combines two injuries. The needles create micro-channels, as in plain microneedling, and radiofrequency energy released at or near the needle tips heats the surrounding dermis. That heat contracts existing collagen and triggers new collagen and elastin formation over the following months. Because most of the heat is delivered below the surface, the epidermis is relatively spared compared with an ablative laser.

All the well-known platforms are built on this principle. Studies of bipolar fractional RF have shown new collagen and elastin formation in treated skin, and clinical studies report improvement in acne scars and enlarged pores. The differences between platforms lie in how the needles are made, how energy flows between them, how deep they can go and what else the system can do.

Morpheus8

Depth and body work

Morpheus8, made by InMode, is a bipolar RF microneedling system with a range of tips for the face and body. Its body tips reach deeper than most facial tips, which is why it is often discussed for subdermal remodelling and body contouring as well as facial skin. Some settings deliver energy at several depths in a single pass.

Depth is useful when the target is deep, but it is not automatically better. On thin facial skin, around the eyes or in pigment-prone skin, deeper and hotter is not the goal. The right depth is the depth of the problem.

“Every clinic can buy a platform. What you are really choosing is the judgement behind the depth, the needle and the energy.”
— Dr Sin Yong, Medical Director, IN Eternity Clinic
Secret RF

Needle choice and Asian skin

Secret RF is a bipolar RF microneedling platform offering both insulated and non-insulated needle cartridges. Insulated needles confine heat to the tip, sparing the epidermis, which suits darker skin types where surface heat can trigger post-inflammatory pigmentation. Non-insulated needles heat along the shaft for a broader effect where that is wanted.

Secret Duo, the platform used at IN Eternity Clinic, comes from the same product family. It adds a 1540 nm non-ablative fractional laser to the RF microneedling module, so one session can address a scar through the needles and the surrounding skin with the laser.

Potenza

Monopolar and bipolar in one system

Potenza, made by Cynosure, is distinguished by offering both monopolar and bipolar RF modes, at more than one frequency, with a choice of tips. In monopolar mode, energy travels from the needles to a return pad on the body, spreading heat more widely; in bipolar mode, it flows between neighbouring needles, keeping heat more local. Frequency also influences how heat is distributed in tissue.

This flexibility is useful in experienced hands. As with every platform, the result depends on how the options are used for a given skin and problem.

Which suits whom

Choosing the treatment, not the logo

Rolling and boxcar acne scars, enlarged pores in Asian skin: insulated needles at dermal depth with conservative energy are often the core approach, on any capable platform. Early laxity and crepey skin of the lower face or neck: deeper settings and a course of sessions. Body skin laxity or stretch marks: longer needles and body-specific protocols. Deep boxcar scars or marked texture: RF microneedling may be paired with fractional CO2 or other resurfacing.

A platform is a tool. What you should be asking a clinic is how they will set depth, energy and needle type for your skin, how many sessions they expect, how they manage pigment risk, and who will perform the treatment. At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong will tell you at assessment which approach he recommends and why, including when RF microneedling is not the right choice.

Reading the claims

How to compare what clinics say

Marketing for RF microneedling often leans on maximum depth, maximum power or the number of needles per tip. These figures describe what a platform can do, not what should be done to your face. Most facial treatments are performed well below a system’s maximum settings, and the safest result in pigment-prone skin often comes from moderate energy over a sensible course.

Useful questions are more specific. What depth will be used for my scars or pores, and why? Insulated or non-insulated needles? How many passes, and how many sessions? How will post-inflammatory pigmentation be prevented and managed? Who will hold the handpiece? A clinic that answers these clearly, whatever the platform, is giving you the information you need. Claims that one system is the newest or strongest tell you very little about your result.

Beyond RF microneedling

When another tool fits better

RF microneedling is not the answer to every texture or laxity problem. Ice-pick scars usually need focal treatment. Tethered scars need releasing with subcision first. Marked sagging of the jowls and mid-face responds better to lifting treatments such as monopolar RF or focused ultrasound, sometimes alongside injectables. Brown pigment needs a pigment laser. Assessment is where these distinctions are made, before any platform is chosen.

What to expect

Comfort, downtime and course

Numbing cream is applied for around forty-five minutes. Each pulse feels like a brief deep warmth or prickle; bony areas are more sensitive. Afterwards, redness and a faint grid of needle marks are usual for a few days, sometimes with swelling, especially under the eyes. Make-up is usually avoided for the first day. A course of sessions a few weeks apart is typical, and collagen remodelling continues for months, so progress is judged at review.

Risks include post-inflammatory pigmentation, prolonged redness, small grid-pattern marks and, rarely, scarring if energy is too high. Active acne, infection, recent isotretinoin, pregnancy, pacemakers and metal implants in the area are discussed before treatment.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Morpheus8 better than Secret RF or Potenza?

None is better in every situation. Morpheus8 is known for deeper tips and body work, Secret RF for insulated and non-insulated needle options, and Potenza for offering monopolar and bipolar modes. For most facial concerns, correct depth, needle choice and conservative settings matter more than the platform.

Does IN Eternity Clinic offer Morpheus8 or Potenza?

IN Eternity Clinic performs RF microneedling on Secret Duo, which pairs RF microneedling with a 1540 nm non-ablative fractional laser. This guide explains other platforms so you can compare what you read. Dr Sin Yong will tell you at assessment which approach he recommends for your skin.

What is the difference between insulated and non-insulated needles?

Insulated needles are coated along the shaft so heat is released only at the tip, protecting the surface of the skin. Non-insulated needles release heat along their length for a broader effect. Insulated needles are often preferred in darker or pigment-prone skin.

Is RF microneedling safe for Asian skin?

It is widely used in Asian skin and is often chosen because it delivers heat below the surface. Post-inflammatory pigmentation is still possible, so energy is kept conservative, insulated needles are used where appropriate, and sun protection and aftercare are part of the plan.

How much downtime is there?

Most people have redness and faint grid marks for a few days, sometimes with swelling. Deeper or more intense settings mean longer recovery. Your expected downtime is estimated at consultation based on your skin and the settings planned, so you can schedule sessions around work and social plans.

How much does RF microneedling cost?

It depends on the area, the number of sessions, the settings and whether it is combined with other treatments such as resurfacing or subcision. A written estimate is given after assessment so the whole plan, including the expected number of sessions, is clear before you start. Comparing quotes is easier when you know the depth, needle type and number of sessions each clinic proposes.

How many sessions are needed?

A course of sessions spaced a few weeks apart is typical for scars, pores and texture. The exact number depends on the concern and your response, and progress is reviewed with standardised photographs between sessions. Collagen remodelling continues for months after the last session, so a final review is usually planned some time after the course ends.
