Pregnancy changes pigment, skin, muscle, hair and pelvic tissue. Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic on Orchard Road helps you decide what to treat, what to wait for, and what fits with breastfeeding.
WhatsApp to Enquire →Key facts ↓After pregnancy, melasma often lightens, hair shedding usually recovers within months, and red stretch marks fade to paler lines. Treatment is timed around your postnatal check, breastfeeding and a stable weight. Skincare and some facial lasers may be considered early; body contouring, injectables and oral pigment medicines usually wait. A loose tummy may mean separated muscles, which are checked first.
The first months are for recovery. Most elective treatments wait until your postnatal review, and treatments over the abdomen or pelvis wait until healing is complete, including after a caesarean section. If you are breastfeeding, injectables and oral medicines for pigment or acne are usually deferred until you have weaned. Body contouring is most useful once your weight has been stable for some months.
The pregnancy and breastfeeding safety page sets out what is generally avoided, what can wait and what may be considered after review.

Pregnancy hormones make pigment cells more active, causing the “mask of pregnancy” and darker underarms, neck and nipples. Much of this fades in the months after delivery. What remains on the face is often melasma, which is managed rather than cured. Melasma treatment combines sun and visible-light protection, topical care and conservative laser such as laser toning; oral tranexamic acid, a prescription medicine, is usually deferred until breastfeeding has finished.
For darker underarms, see underarm pigmentation, and for every pigment type the pigmentation hub.
“The first months after a baby are for recovery. I would rather see you at six months with a clear plan than at six weeks with a rushed one.”
Stretch mark treatment works differently on red striae rubrae and white striae albae. Red marks are generally more responsive, so it is worth being assessed within the first year. Fractional laser and resurfacing aim for softer, less visible marks rather than their disappearance.
A tummy that stays soft after pregnancy may be loose skin, stubborn fat or separated abdominal muscles. Diastasis recti is checked first; if the gap is significant, physiotherapy or a surgical opinion comes before any energy treatment. For skin and fat, sagging tummy treatment and the 4K Body Lift are used, and the body hub lists every option.

During pregnancy more hairs stay in the growth phase; after delivery many enter the resting phase together, and shedding follows two to four months later. It usually recovers within six to twelve months. If it continues beyond that, or the parting widens, an underlying pattern of female hair loss, low iron or a thyroid change may be the reason. The hair and scalp hub explains how this is assessed.
Childbirth can leave a feeling of laxity, dryness or mild stress leakage. Pelvic floor physiotherapy is usually the first step and is worth doing regardless. For persistent symptoms, IN Eternity Clinic offers a laser-based intimate treatment, the G Lift protocol, described on the vaginal rejuvenation page. It is considered only after your postnatal review, once bleeding has stopped and any tear or scar has healed.
It depends on the treatment. Gentle facials and skincare can usually resume soon after delivery. Facial lasers may be considered after your postnatal check, depending on breastfeeding and healing. Body contouring waits until your weight is stable and the abdomen has healed, and injectables are usually deferred until breastfeeding ends. Dr Sin Yong sets the timing with you.
It often fades significantly over the months after delivery, especially with strict sun protection. In some women it persists, particularly with continued sun or heat exposure or hormonal contraception. If it is still present six to twelve months later, it is assessed and managed with topical care and, where suitable, conservative laser.
They can be improved but not erased. Red stretch marks usually respond better than white ones, so earlier treatment helps. Fractional laser and resurfacing can soften texture and colour over a course. The aim is marks that are less noticeable, and the number of sessions depends on their age, colour and your skin type.
Common reasons are separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti), loose skin and stubborn fat, often together. Separated muscles let the abdomen push forward and are not improved by skin or fat treatment. A simple examination checks the gap. Physiotherapy helps many women, and a large gap may need a surgical opinion before any contouring.
Yes. Postpartum shedding usually starts two to four months after birth and recovers within six to twelve months. It can be alarming but rarely leads to lasting thinning. If shedding continues, the parting widens or you notice bald patches, see a doctor, as iron deficiency, thyroid changes or pattern hair loss may be involved.
It depends on which concerns you want treated, the treatments chosen, the size of the areas and how many sessions are needed. Many women choose to start with one area. A written quote is given after Dr Sin Yong has assessed you, and you can take as long as you need to decide.
