In short

The main types of eyebrow embroidery are microblading (hair strokes cut by hand), nano brows (hair strokes drawn by a machine needle), powder or misty brows (soft machine shading), ombre brows (shading lighter at the front) and combination brows (strokes in front, shading behind). They differ in tool and pattern, which decides how they heal on your skin and how long they last. See eyebrow embroidery in Singapore.

Key facts
  • Hand strokes: microblading uses a manual tool with a blade of stacked needles to place pigment into the papillary dermis; the result is described as lasting about 12 to 18 months [1].
  • Machine needles: an electron-microscope study of a five-round-shader needle, a common shading needle, measured the tip at about 6.8 μm; a bent tip was about 16 μm, 2.5 times thicker [3].
  • Complications: in a survey of 1,352 eyebrow and eyeliner clients in Japan, 12.1% reported a complication, itching was the most common after brows (8.2%) and infection was reported in 0.2% [4].
  • Granulomas: of 21 published cases of granulomatous reaction after microblading, 10 were foreign-body granulomas and 11 were sarcoidosis, 7 of them systemic [5].
  • Removal: a review of 11 studies covering 129 people treated for eyebrow pigment found picosecond Nd:YAG quicker and more effective than Q-switched, with darkening less common [6].
The main types

What are the types of eyebrow embroidery?

Every type of eyebrow embroidery places pigment into the upper dermis. What separates them is two choices: the tool (a hand-held blade or a machine needle) and the pattern (lines that imitate hairs, or tiny dots that build shading). The names on a price list are combinations of those two choices, and the names are not standardised. "Feather", "3D" and "6D" brows usually mean hand-drawn hair strokes; "misty" is the common Singapore name for light powder shading. In Singapore, cosmetic tattooing is generally provided as a beauty service, and none of these names has an official definition, so it is worth asking which tool and which pattern will actually be used.

IN Eternity Clinic offers microblading, powder or ombre (misty) brows and combination brows. Nano brows are explained here for comparison; they are not offered as a separate technique at the clinic.

Hair strokes

Hair stroke eyebrow embroidery: microblading or nano brows?

Hair stroke eyebrow embroidery aims to add lines that read as individual hairs among your own. Microblading does this by hand: a blade of stacked needles cuts shallow, crisp lines and pigment is deposited into the papillary dermis. A review describes the result as semi-permanent, lasting about 12 to 18 months, and notes that the rise in untrained practitioners has been followed by a rise in side effects [1].

Nano brows draw similar strokes with a machine and a single fine needle. They are often marketed as gentler on the skin and as suiting skin that blurs blade strokes. That may be true for some people, but there is very little published evidence comparing nano strokes with microblading on healing, fading or complications, so claims either way are mostly marketing. Whatever tool draws the line, the skin decides how it heals: on oily skin with larger pores, any fine line tends to soften into a haze sooner, and Singapore's heat and sweat add to that.

At IN Eternity Clinic hair strokes are made by microblading, and only where the skin is likely to hold them. Where it is not, strokes are kept to the front of the brow or replaced by soft shading. How strokes and shading compare as they heal and fade is set out in microblading vs powder brows vs ombre brows.

Misty and ombre

Misty and ombre eyebrow embroidery: what is the difference?

Misty eyebrow embroidery and powder brows are the same idea: a machine places thousands of tiny dots so the brow looks softly filled, like brow powder. Shading needles are grouped; one common type is the five-round shader. Under an electron microscope, a new needle of this type had a tip of about 6.8 μm, while a bent tip was about 16 μm, and lead particles from manufacturing were found on the needle shafts; the authors call for careful inspection of sterilised needles [3]. It is one reason needles should be sterile, single-use and opened in front of you.

Ombre eyebrow embroidery is shading with a gradient: light and airy at the inner end, deeper towards the arch and tail. Shading usually holds better than strokes on oily, combination and mature skin, fades more evenly and often lasts two to three years, though it can drift cooler or warmer as iron-oxide pigment breaks down.

Combination brows

When do combination brows make sense?

Combination brows use hair strokes at the front, where your eye reads detail, and shading through the body and tail. They suit people with a sparse front but skin that would blur strokes along the whole brow, and people whose old microblading has faded into broken lines. Faded strokes can often be blended into a combination or ombre brow; going the other way, from dense shading back to crisp strokes, is harder and may need laser lightening first.

A combination brow is not automatically the safe middle choice. It has two fading patterns in one brow, so the touch-up plan has to cover both: strokes may need a colour boost at around 12 to 18 months, shading at around 18 to 30 months. Men often prefer a flatter, denser look with light misty shading between existing hairs and few visible strokes; see eyebrow embroidery for men.

Safety

Do the risks differ between types of eyebrow embroidery?

The main risks are shared by every type, because each is a shallow tattoo. In a survey of 1,352 clients after eyebrow or eyeliner permanent makeup in Japan, 12.1% reported a complication, mostly short-lived; itching was the most common after brows at 8.2%, and infection was reported in 0.2% [4]. Responses came a median of 15 days after treatment, so delayed reactions were not captured. A dermatology review lists infectious, allergic and inflammatory complications, more likely when hygiene and aftercare are poor, and notes that permanent makeup can shift or change in appearance if filler or local anaesthetic is later placed beneath it [2].

Some reactions appear months or years later. A review of 21 granulomatous reactions after microblading found that about half were foreign-body granulomas and the rest were sarcoidosis, seven of them systemic [5], which is why a firm, raised brow should be seen by a doctor. Unwanted brows of any type can usually be lightened: a review of 11 studies covering 129 people treated for eyebrow pigment found picosecond Nd:YAG quicker and more effective than Q-switched, with paradoxical darkening less common [6]. See eyebrow tattoo removal.

At IN Eternity

Which type of eyebrow embroidery is offered at IN Eternity Clinic?

The clinic offers microblading, powder or ombre (misty) brows and combination brows. Eyebrow embroidery is offered at IN Eternity Clinic. Your medical history and skin are assessed at consultation, and the pigment work itself is done by the clinic's embroidery specialist, not a doctor. The technique is chosen after the skin and existing brow hair have been examined, because the same method can heal differently on two people: oiliness and pore size, eczema or seborrhoeic dermatitis around the brows, any keloid tendency, allergy history, recent oral isotretinoin and medicines such as blood thinners are all reviewed first.

The shape is mapped from your own brow bones and hair direction and agreed in a mirror first. Numbing cream is applied for 20 to 30 minutes, and a first session takes about two hours, much of it spent on design. A perfecting touch-up follows at six to eight weeks. If old pigment has changed colour, or a brow ever needs correcting, it can be lightened with picosecond or Q-switched laser on the DEKA TORO or Fotona StarWalker PQX after a test area. Suitability is decided in person and results vary. See eyebrow embroidery and semi-permanent makeup.

At assessment

What Dr Sin Yong looks for

  • How oily the brow skin is and how large the pores are, which decides strokes versus shading.
  • Eczema, seborrhoeic dermatitis or infection around the brows, which is settled first.
  • How much natural brow hair there is, its colour, and whether it is thinning for a medical reason.
  • Old brow pigment that has turned red, orange, grey or blue and may need lightening first.
  • Keloid tendency, pigment or nickel allergy, recent isotretinoin and blood-thinning medicines.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What are the different types of eyebrow embroidery?

The main types are microblading (hand-drawn hair strokes), nano brows (machine-drawn hair strokes), powder or misty brows (soft machine shading), ombre brows (shading lighter at the front) and combination brows (strokes at the front with shading behind). They differ in tool and pattern, which changes how they heal and fade on your skin.

What is nano eyebrow embroidery?

Nano brows are hair strokes drawn with a machine and a single fine needle rather than cut with a hand blade. They are often marketed as gentler and suitable for more skin types, but published evidence comparing them with microblading is very limited. IN Eternity Clinic does not offer nano brows as a separate technique.

Is hair stroke eyebrow embroidery the same as microblading?

Usually, yes. Hair stroke eyebrow embroidery means pigment laid as fine lines that imitate hairs. Most often this is microblading, done with a hand tool, though some studios draw strokes with a machine and call them nano or feather brows. Ask which tool will be used.

What is misty eyebrow embroidery?

Misty eyebrow embroidery is a light form of powder shading. A machine places many tiny dots so the brow looks softly filled rather than drawn in lines. It often suits oily or combination skin and people who fill their brows with powder, and it usually fades more evenly than strokes.

What is the difference between ombre and misty eyebrow embroidery?

Both use machine shading. Ombre eyebrow embroidery adds a deliberate gradient, light and airy at the inner end and deeper towards the arch and tail. Misty brows can be more even from front to tail. In practice many shaded brows are a little of both.

Who are combination brows suitable for?

Combination brows suit people who want hair-like detail at the front but whose skin would blur strokes across the whole brow, and people with faded microblading. They carry two fading patterns, so touch-ups need planning for both strokes and shading.

Which type of eyebrow embroidery lasts the longest?

Shaded brows, such as powder, misty and ombre, often last two to three years, while microblading strokes typically need a colour boost at around 12 to 18 months, sooner on oily skin. Sun, exfoliating skincare and smoking shorten all types.
