In short

IPL hair removal uses a broad band of filtered light, while a laser uses one wavelength aimed at the pigment in hair. Both reduce hair. In a randomised trial, a diode laser cleared more underarm hair than IPL twelve months after treatment, about 69 vs 53 in 100. IN Eternity Clinic does not offer IPL; it uses the Lutronic Clarity II laser at 755 nm and 1064 nm. See laser hair removal in Singapore.

Key facts
  • Head to head: in 30 people with laser on one underarm and IPL on the other, hair counts fell about 69 in 100 with a diode laser and 53 in 100 with IPL, twelve months after six sessions [1].
  • Comfort: in the same trial the laser was more painful, 3.7 vs 1.6 on a 10-point scale, but each session was quicker [1].
  • Darker skin: a meta-analysis of 12 trials in skin types III to VI found alexandrite laser reduced hair more than IPL, and long-pulsed Nd:YAG caused less pigment darkening than IPL [2].
  • Not always different: a comparison in 232 people found similar hair reduction at six months with alexandrite, diode and IPL [3].
  • Long-term, not permanent: no light method has been shown to remove every hair for good [4].
How each works

What is the difference between IPL and laser hair removal?

A laser emits one wavelength of light, chosen so that the pigment in the hair absorbs it and turns it into heat that damages the follicle. IPL, intense pulsed light, is a flash lamp that emits a broad band of wavelengths, filtered to suit hair; more of its energy falls outside the ideal range.

Both rely on dark pigment in the hair, so neither works on white, grey, red or very fair hair. The difference is how precisely the energy is aimed, which matters most in darker skin.

Effectiveness

Is IPL or laser better for hair removal?

In the best long-term trial, laser did better. Thirty people had a diode laser on one underarm and IPL on the other, six sessions each, four weeks apart. Twelve months later, hair counts had fallen about 69 in 100 on the laser side and 53 in 100 on the IPL side [1].

Not every study shows a gap. A comparison in 232 people found similar hair reduction six months after treatment with alexandrite, diode and IPL [3]. Results depend on the device, the settings and the hair, so trial averages are not a forecast for you.

Darker skin

Which is safer for darker skin?

Darker skin holds more pigment of its own, so light meant for the hair can also heat the skin. A meta-analysis of 12 trials in skin types III to VI found long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser caused less darkening of the skin than IPL, and alexandrite laser reduced hair more than IPL [2].

That is why the wavelength is chosen per skin type: at IN Eternity Clinic, 755 nm alexandrite for lighter skin and 1064 nm Nd:YAG for darker or tanned skin. See laser hair removal for dark skin.

At IN Eternity

Why does IN Eternity Clinic use laser rather than IPL?

The Lutronic Clarity II offers both 755 nm and 1064 nm, so the wavelength and pulse can be matched to your skin type and to coarse, medium or fine hair, and changed as the hair thins. IPL is not offered at IN Eternity Clinic.

A course is usually six to eight sessions for long-term reduction. See laser hair removal in Singapore and how many sessions.

What Dr Sin Yong looks for

  • Your skin type and any recent tan, which decide 755 nm or 1064 nm.
  • The colour of the hair: dark hair suits laser; white, grey or very fair hair does not.
  • Whether the hair is coarse, medium or fine, which sets the pulse.
  • Any previous IPL or home-device treatment and how the skin reacted.
  • Signs of a hormonal cause, such as new or fast-spreading hair.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is IPL the same as laser hair removal?

No. IPL uses a broad band of filtered light from a flash lamp, while a laser uses one wavelength aimed at the pigment in hair. Both reduce hair, but they are different technologies.

Is IPL or laser better for hair removal?

In a randomised trial, a diode laser cleared more underarm hair than IPL twelve months after treatment, about 69 vs 53 in 100. Some other studies found similar results, so the device, settings and hair type all matter.

Is IPL safe for darker skin?

IPL can be used with care, but in pooled trials in skin types III to VI, long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser caused less darkening of the skin than IPL. Darker skin is usually treated with a 1064 nm laser.

Does IPL hurt less than laser?

In a head-to-head trial, IPL was rated less painful than a diode laser, 1.6 vs 3.7 on a 10-point scale. Cooling and settings matched to your skin make laser tolerable for most people.

Does IN Eternity Clinic offer IPL hair removal?

No. IN Eternity Clinic uses the Lutronic Clarity II laser, with 755 nm alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG chosen for your skin and hair.

Is IPL or laser hair removal permanent?

Neither guarantees permanent removal. Both give long-term reduction: fewer hairs regrow and many regrow finer, with maintenance judged after the course.
